Secondary Newsletter

Greetings from the Head of Secondary

Dear Parents, Students, and RBIS Community,

I trust that everyone enjoyed the midterm break and returned refreshed and ready to tackle the challenges ahead. As we progress closer to the IGCSE and A level exam season, it's imperative that students maintain a consistent study routine. Remember, repetition remains one of the most effective revision strategies.

February has been a month bustling with activities and achievements at our school. Ten of our students had the enriching opportunity to attend the FOBISIA student leadership conference in Malaysia, broadening their horizons and fostering valuable leadership skills. Additionally, NASA offered its second online workshop to our year 9 to 13 students, further igniting their passion for science and space exploration.

The festive spirit was alive as the entire school came together to celebrate Chinese New Year, embracing cultural diversity and unity. Meanwhile, our year 9 students embarked on a meaningful community service trip, lending a helping hand by packing and distributing lunches to those in need. Furthermore, I'm delighted to share that RBIS took a proactive step by setting up a playground for a rural school, exemplifying our commitment to giving back to the community.

In this edition, we take pride in highlighting some outstanding achievements in mathematics and physics. Additionally, we look forward to sharing more about our ongoing community service projects and the establishment of our newly formed Model United Nations (MUN) club, which promises to offer enriching experiences and opportunities for our students.

As we move forward into the remainder of the academic year, let us remain united in our pursuit of excellence. I encourage students to seize every opportunity for growth and exploration, whether through academic endeavors, extracurricular activities, or community service initiatives. Let's continue to inspire and support one another on this journey of discovery and achievement. Together, we can make a meaningful impact not only within our school community but also in the wider world.

Tom De Smet

FOBISIA student leadership conference (Malaysia)

Our first FOBISIA conference from February 1 - 4, 2024 was a resounding success. Ten of our students, accompanied by two teachers, set forth to Penang, Malaysia to join 400+ of their peers at the 2024 FOBISIA Student Leadership Conference hosted by Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS). The trip was packed with back-to-back events, leadership and mentorship opportunities, new friendships, a talent showcase and much more.

Arrival in Penang: An early morning start and a short flight later, we were in Penang. Energized by the beautiful backdrop of the Andaman Sea, the kids were more than ready to head to opening night. This was an informal mixer organized by POWIIS at a restaurant not far from our hotel. A musical evening and dinner allowed students to mingle and socialize with other delegates, which made them even more excited for Day 1 of the conference.

Conference Day 1: On the first official day of the conference, we made our way to POWIIS, where a full day of activities awaited us. Ms. Linda Cruse, founder and CEO of Race4Good was amongst the speakers that morning. Students were assigned into diverse teams with other FOBISIA students, where each group was tasked with creating a presentation. These presentations were centered on a Race 4 Good project based on climate change in the Arctic region. Guided by their mentors, students showcased a range of skills such as budgeting, marketing, branding, leadership, and more. These were then presented to Ms. Cruse who works closely with people affected by these events. A long day’s hard work paid off, as our students did some of their best work and created some outstanding presentations.

Conference Day 2: Another exciting day which started with a delicious (and very early!) breakfast at our hotel. We then made our way to POWIIS again, where students attended several interactive sessions led by inspiring youth leaders from around the world including Balinese climate activist Melati Wijsen, Malaysian speaker and entrepreneur Michael Teoh, and Malaysian social rights advocate Heidy Quah. Following these inspirational sessions, our day took an even more meaningful turn as we headed to the beach to participate in a clean-up activity as part of community service. This was followed by a quick pit stop at the hotel to get dressed for the gala. The evening was a great success - lots of pictures, lots of laughs and joining their new friends on stage to showcase their singing and musical chops. An exhausting but thoroughly enjoyable day!

Conference Day 3: Last day in Penang

This was the last day of our conference (and the trip). Even though we left for the airport at midday, students got the chance to attend some more workshops, including beatboxing and public speaking. Our thanks to POWIIS for hosting us and to all the amazing youth leaders who shared their insights. If this conference is anything to go by, our students are sure to have many more exciting opportunities yet to come.

HASSE/NASA workshop: The New Space Vehicles of NASA

We're thrilled to share that our students embarked on an exciting journey learning about NASA's latest advancements in space exploration! During the second session by HASSE (Houston Association for Space and Science Education) and NASA on February 27th, our students delved into the innovative Commercial Crew Program, a pivotal initiative that employs commercial spaceflight services to transport astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

The program involves two major contractors: SpaceX and Boeing. SpaceX's contribution is the revolutionary Crew Dragon spacecraft, while Boeing has developed the CST-100 Starliner. These modern vehicles are launched into space by powerful rockets, marking a new era in space travel.

Our students also learned about NASA’s upcoming programs, including the first human mission to Mars as well as all the training that astronauts undergo for these missions. Despite the involvement of private companies in constructing the spacecraft, the astronauts are still required to complete NASA's stringent training program. The launch suits were particularly interesting. These are custom-tailored suits that provide their own pressurized environment. The suits are used for communication and are dully equipped with a cooling system, a 3D oriented helmet, touchscreen compatible gloves and hearing protection for ascent and reentry.

Another particularly interesting aspect of the session was learning about Orion and the Space Launch System (SLS). Orion is NASA's new spacecraft, built to take humans farther into space than they've ever gone before. It will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew and provide a safe return to Earth. SLS is a super heavy-lift launch vehicle that is the only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts, and cargo directly to the Moon on a single mission.

Our students were fascinated with all the information and wanted to learn all about NASA’s budget, the rockets’ capabilities, the Hubble constant and much more. Stay tuned for more updates on our space exploration journey!

Chinese New Year celebrations

We celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday, the 12th of February. It was a day filled with vibrant performances and engaging workshops, bringing the spirit of the Lunar New Year to our school community.

The celebration commenced with a Lion dance performance that captivated everyone's attention. Following the performance, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops, each offering a unique glimpse into Chinese culture and traditions.

Visit to Wat Tha Chumnum School, Ang Thong

When RBIS Primary campus installed new playground equipment it was decided to donate the previous playground apparatus to a school in need.  The school we decided to help was  Wat Tha Chumnum School in Ang Thong. Below you will see the the departure of the equipment from RBIS and its arrival at  Wat Tha Chumnum School. The equipment was  soon  set up for the children to play on.  Our 6th Form students were asked if they would like to visit the school to meet the children and their teachers. Look through the photos of their day at the school below.

Our 6th Form visited Wat Tha Chumnum School in Ang Thong on Friday 16th February. It was a 2 hour journey to Ang Thong  and when we arrived we were warmly met by the director,  Ms Montha Jittachuen, and teachers of the school. After a snack we were introduced to the children of the school as we visited their classrooms. Although the children were shy some of them enjoyed speaking to our 6th formers. We had planned to play some English games and also have an art activity with Year 7 and Year 8.  Mariha led the Art activity and all the children soon engaged in creating  an interesting and colorful pieces of art work. Awei, Mei,  Hans and Jericho led the English activities which the children thoroughly enjoyed and surprised our 6th formers with their English language skills.  With out a doubt the most enjoyed activity was 'Simon says'  with lots of laughter when the children were caught out.

After the games we moved across to the playground and watched as some of the younger children were enjoying their lunch break playing on the slides.  They obviously liked their new play area and we were told that on Saturdays children from other schools nearby often turn up to play. Lunch followed and a short meeting with the director and teachers followed. We discussed about ways in which we could help the school in the next academic year including English Camps and some projects around the school that require attention. The Director hanked us for the play equipment and for visiting the school.  It had been an enjoyable day and our thanks to Mei, Mariha,  Awei, Hans and Jericho  for making such  a wonderful time for the children of Wat Tha Chumnum School.

What's Going on?

Year 7 Computing

So far with year 7 we have covered 2D Animation with Pivot Animator V5. Learning stickman animation using sprites is essential because it serves as a gateway to understanding the fundamentals of animation and video. Starting with simple frames and basic movements, such as those studied in year 7, lays the foundation for more complex techniques. As students progress, they'll delve into intricacies like simulating walking motions and mastering timing and spacing. With enough knowledge and practice, they'll gain the ability to craft captivating animations complete with storyboarding, enabling them to express their creativity and bring their ideas to life in exciting and engaging ways.

Year 8 PE

Our year 8 students have been learning volleyball during PE this month. We have practiced basic skills in volleyball from passing, setting, serving, spike and various other movements to playing in teams. The children had a lot of fun and further developed their sports abilities and understanding of the game.

Year 9 General Science

In Year 9 Science, students have been exploring the topic of Light, delving into the principles of reflection and refraction. Using pins to trace the path of light as it journeyed through a glass slab, students observed the behavior of light as it transitions from one medium to another and measured the angles of incidence, refraction, and emergence, noting the bending of light—or refraction—at the interface of air and glass.

To complement their experiment, the students also engaged with interactive simulations. These digital tools allowed them to visualize how light bends at various angles when passing through different materials, deepening their understanding of refraction. Through these immersive activities, they not only grasped the fundamental scientific theories but also honed their skills in precise measurement and analytical observation—essential tools for any budding scientist.

Year 10 IGCSE Art

IGCSE students in year 10 are currently engrossed in creating captivating sketches as part of their coursework, exploring diverse themes such as nature's intricate beauty and the rich tapestry of Indonesian/Thai culture and history. Employing a wide array of artistic materials, they predominantly utilize watercolors and charcoal to breathe life into their creations, infusing each stroke with meaning and expression. This endeavor not only hones their artistic skills but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the subjects they depict, nurturing creativity and cultural understanding along the way.

Year 11 IGCSE English

Reading for Inference

In preparation for their upcoming Cambridge IGCSE English Language examinations, Year 11 have been honing their reading skills by responding to an array of intriguing tasks which purposefully aim to improve their intuition and investigative senses when faced with new words and challenging phrases. They were asked to select their own choice of novel or non-fiction reader; this in turn gave them a personalized interest within language exploration.

When reading for inference students are objectively trying to raise their reading level by searching for context clues within other words or references nearby the word in question. They can also identify the type of word, intonation and positioning of prefixes and suffixes to add further context to the meaning, in order to gain a better picture of what the vocabulary means. Here are a selection of responses which seek to identify challenging context words and provide a conclusion using factual evidence to support their detective work:

Year 12 HSD Thai

In Year 12, as part of our High School Diploma in Thai Language, we are studying how to conduct research and write reports. Our focus is on the steps involved in research, accessing and utilizing information resources, compiling bibliographies, note-taking for report writing, and adhering to the standard format for references and bibliographies. Additionally, students are trained to summarize information from various research topics, analyze acquired knowledge and ideas, and provide useful suggestions. This type of learning enables us to apply Thai language skills and knowledge to further our university-level education, which emphasizes independent research exploration

  Year 13 A level maths

What it takes to be successful in A - Level Maths

Maths exam preparation is a different ordeal compared to the other knowledge-based subjects I’m currently doing. For me, the most important way of preparing for Maths exams is practise (a lot of it). Going over past concepts requires solving questions from the Pure textbooks even if they’re questions I aced months before. After that, I consolidate what I revised through exam-style questions. I also find it useful to time myself when doing past papers as it forces me to remember my techniques faster so that I’m well prepared when facing the final paper in May/June.

HOUSES @ RBIS

4 houses

The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.

Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.

Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary or Secondary sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains  (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

House events at Secondary (February) :

RBIS 23-24 Football Liga

Thus far, the league has been ablaze with excitement, witnessing Win of House Dragon effortlessly netting a hat-trick in every game, consistently shattering previous records. As it stands, the only conceivable scenario for Dragon to lose the league title is if they falter in their final game against house Unicorn and Lion secures victory with a substantial goal difference. Anticipation mounts as the top two teams gear up to clash in the cup final, while the league champions eagerly await their match against the esteemed teacher's all-star team.

KS4 - Table tennis championship final

In a thrilling table tennis match between House Dragon and House Phoenix, it seemed victory was within the grasp of House Dragon's champion, Win. With each volley and exchange, the match remained neck and neck, creating an atmosphere of intense anticipation. However, just when victory seemed certain for Win, Sinchan from House Phoenix executed a remarkable comeback. With skillful precision and determination, Sinchan turned the tide of the game, surprising everyone with a sudden reversal of fortune. In the end, against all odds, Sinchan emerged victorious, securing a memorable win for House Phoenix in what was initially a closely contested match.

Community service at Secondary (February) :

Friday, February 9th, was a day to remember. The Secondary Student Council organized their first fundraising event - "Anything But A Backpack Day" - and invited the entire school to participate. In Secondary, many students opted for a variety of unconventional ways to carry their belongings. Pushchairs, wicker baskets, suitcases, and even a dollhouse were among the creative choices made; it brought a delightful end to the week, and we extend our gratitude to all our students for their participation.

Leaving behind the traditional backpacks, learners from Early Years and Primary arrived at school equipped with unconventional alternatives. Some chose the sturdy reliability of a laundry basket, while others embraced the whimsicality of a popcorn bucket. A few adventurous souls even wheeled in suitcases, and there were those who crafted makeshift slings out of bedsheets. Each unique choice showcased creativity and innovation among the learners.

In addition to the enjoyment experienced by all, a fantastic total of 16,140 baht was donated towards the 6th Form community service project scheduled for June 2024. This remarkable effort reflects the dedication and generosity of our school community. Well done to everyone involved!

The RBIS 6th Form Community Service Residential is scheduled to take place in June 2024. The students will be revisiting Pinkaew School in Ayutthaya to complete the activities we began last year.  There is a fair amount to be  tackled but our students are looking forward to  the challenge and plans are already being worked on.

We will organise two more fundraising events and have set a target of 50000 baht. We are already almost half way towards our target and with the RBIS communities help we will try our best to reach it.  Please look at the poster below which highlights the tasks our 6th Formers will carry out.

Alumni of the month

Suravit (Pro) Ratnich left RBIS to move to the USA  in 2013

RBIS was my second home since I was a kid since I joined in Pre K. I learned a lot since I was young and then I started advancing towards primary school and that’s when the real journey began. Primary school taught me the benefits of learning English and being able to speak the language fluently was beneficial for me when I went to finish my high school and my bachelor’s degree in the States.

RBIS was a place that I felt comfortable in and the teachers and students were very welcoming. Being able to communicate with people that I trusted was a big help to me while I was RBIS. I never thought I was ready to start a new journey in the USA but being able to speak English fluently helped me pave my way through Middle Tennessee State university which is where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.

After 9 years in the U.S.A I returned to my home country and I’m now studying for my master’s degree in Bangkok University majoring in International Global Media and Communications Studies. It has been a long journey but I never forgot my time at RBIS or my teachers, my friends and most importantly the experience I received from the school itself.
