Secondary Newsletter

Greetings from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the RBIS secondary newsletter. I am  thrilled to be the Head of Secondary at RBIS, and I am looking forward to working with the students, teachers, and parents of this fantastic community. Having been at RBIS International School for more than 14 years I have always been struck by the friendliness, sincerity and openness of our wonderful students; it is indicative of a school community that fosters personal growth and the freedom to be an individual. My goal as head at RBIS is to ensure the continuation of our student centred approach to education, that has clearly enabled such a strong sense of both community and self in our students. I was delighted to meet many of you at our information evening a few short weeks ago. If I have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet, please feel free to come into the school for a chat; I have an open door policy and welcome any opportunity that brings the school community together to share ideas.

Now that the new year is well under way, we are able to share with you a few of the events that have been going on over the past few weeks at the RBIS secondary campus. The year started with ice breaker activities that involved the secondary students working together. We have since completed events such as the Round Square poster competition, and the house badminton tournament is well under way. We have also had the opportunity to send some of our students on a trip already this year, will have a fun performance and workshop organized by the UK Performance Exchange Theatre Company on Wednesday 9th November, and more information about the upcoming residential will follow soon. Please look through the pictures and articles below, and if you have any news to share with the community, feel free to let me know.

Y.6 - 9

What's Going on?

Year 6 science and maths

Science classes on human brain anatomy and neuronal functions within the brain

Maths Team Extravaganza  focusing on Magic Squares

Year 7 English

English this year started with quite a bang... Year 7 were involved in three separate shipwrecks and all had to survive on desert islands!

Not only did they have to learn survival skills and write instructions for how to complete tasks such as building shelters, starting fires and catching fish; they also had to vote for an island leader which required them to use their persuasive speaking skills.

Luckily, all students were rescued and each group gave a presentation of their ordeal to the media - this included descriptions of the storm, the island and what life was like - it sounded harrowing!

Year 8 drama

This first term, Year 8 has been transformed into 'revolting children' from the musical Matilda.

They have learned drama techniques such as freeze frames, miming, using body language and voice.

We have had gigglesome gags, silly puns, brain-tickling scenarios and the Trunchbull's favourite insults!

This drama class have raised chuckles from everybody, both young and old!

Year 9 science

Year 9 Science focuses on pre-IGCSE skill building where students learn important concepts that build a foundation for the coming two years of study.

We started the year by taking a more detailed look at the structure of the atom, including sub-atomic particles and their properties. By using a variety of visual learning techniques, students explored the idea of atoms being the building blocks of matter and how atoms of one element differ from the atoms of another. Students held in-class discussions, looked at various atomic models and showed a keen interest in particle theory of matter.

Students also learned important skills in biology, including laboratory techniques and use of microscopes. In physics, they learnt about various forces around us, including gravity, air resistance, water resistance, and uthrust and some more advanced concepts such as terminal velocity and free fall.

The ideas explored in Year 9 will help students to make better subject choices at IGCSE, which is an important milestone in their lives and the first step towards their potential future careers.

Y.10 - 13

What's Going on?

Year 10   IGCSE Core Maths

The students have begun their two year IGCSE course of study by looking at the topic number. Already they have covered factors and multiples, worked through the four rules of fractions as well as the concept of simple and compound interest...and more!  For all units students are able to see how each mathematical topic relates to everyday life for example half price sales, 15% off, interest rates on loans & savings and also approximation (very useful when you are shopping and keeping tabs on what you have spent)

Year 11 IGCSE Biology

In Biology, students develop a range of skills, including experimental skills. Practicals are not only enjoyable in themselves but also help the students to increase their understanding of the learning objectives described in the syllabus.

This week, Year 11 Students dissected a chicken’s heart to discover some of the structures inside and draw conclusions from their observations and measurements.

A chicken’s heart is smaller than a human heart but works in the same way.

Year 12 chemistry

At Year 12, students study the Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Subsidiary in Chemistry, which is relevant for those who have achieved a GCSE in Chemistry and who want to study the subject at a higher level.

In the first year of Chemistry studies, students develop their knowledge and understanding of chemistry by applying concepts to a range of different problems set in a variety of contexts, including advanced mathematical and practical skills.

Year 12 students started out by learning about atomic structure and the periodic table in detail. They explored the structure of the atom and orbitals, learnt how to measure molar volumes experimentally and then focused further on bond angles, molecule shapes and polarity of molecules.

The course is modular and in May 2023 students will sit for their AS Level Chemistry examinations, to complete three of the six units of A Level Chemistry.

Year 13 High School Diploma Thai Language

The Thai language subjects in the course of High School Diploma for Year 12-13, reading comprehension and writing summary, will focus on having students read articles that use advanced academic vocabulary, so that students will understand and be able to use the academic vocabulary when writing academic articles. At the same time, by doing so, students will be able to develop their reading comprehension and writing summary skills. In addition, students will broaden their perspective and gain new points of views from academic articles that analyze and express writers’ attitudes, including those articles translated from foreign languages and articles of Thai scholars specifically chosen for students to study in order to holistically develop students' language skills.

Trips

Year 12 & 13 Greater Bangkok University Fair

On Thursday 22nd September, Years 12 and 13 headed over to NIST to take part in the Greater Bangkok University Fair. Students were able to meet with representatives of universities from all over the world: Asia, Europe, Australasia and North America - over 195 universities were in attendance! Students made the most of the opportunity by asking questions about specific courses and finding out more about universities that they are interested in, in order to support them with deciding where to apply for their post A Level education. An informative afternoon was had by all!

HOUSES @ RBIS

4 houses

The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.

Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.

Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary, Middle or Senior sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains / Vice-captains (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

House events at Secondary (weeks 1 to 6) :

Badminton tournament

Who's making all that racquet? RBIS that's who!

This year, the much requested whole school badminton tournament is back and as exciting as ever!

Years 6, 7 and 8 have played their first round. The students through to the second stage of the Middle school tournament are:

Y6: Anna, Domino, Janice and Sooro Kim

I also want to give a big shout out to everyone who has played in the tournament so far, especially those students who were nervous, you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone and absolutely smashed it!

The Y9 - Y13 High school tournament will begin this week.

There is also a new aspect to the competition this year. The teachers' have their own tournament, which was opened by Mr Mongare and Mr De Smet, followed by a creative showdown: Ms Bell (English) vs Mr Stein (Art). The next match will have Ms Paliwala vs Ms Gordillo - it's too close to call!

ROUND SQUARE @ RBIS

RBIS is proud to announce it is a global member member of ROUND SQUARE which is a prestigious international organisation with schools in over 50 countries, across six continents.

It focuses on holistic education practices through the following six key IDEALS:

Internationalism: Students are taught to value and respect all cultures, religions and languages. They learn to see themselves as global citizens and are asked to look beyond gender, class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.

Democracy: Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are in place for students to voice their views. Students are also taught to appreciate the importance of self-discipline and are trained and expected to share in the responsibility for development of the school.

Environment: Round Square students are expected to demonstrate concern for all natural environments, to be aware of proven problems and to play a practical role in tackling environmental issues. Students are taught the interdependence needed to maintain a healthy relationship between human beings and the planet.

Adventure: Building character through adventure, meeting physical challenges and developing an appreciation of the outdoors: these are all central to Round Square schools.

Leadership: Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the school community are fostered extensively.

Service: This is the key element utilised by Round Square schools to prepare students for life through the expectation of serving others. Students commit themselves to local, regional and international service projects.

Recycling project

On Friday 23rd September, we handed over 55,000 plastic tops to Precious Plastic

Bangkok which were collected during the last three years. It was a wonderful moment for our

students as they have been actively involved in recycling plastic tops, ring pulls and plastic

bottles for a long time. The children will continue with these projects as they are now more

aware of the need to recycle items and they want to help create a greener environment for everyone to enjoy.

Internationalism

At RBIS International School we pride ourselves in providing our students with opportunities that help them to learn in different ways. As a member of Round Square, RBIS students are able to take part in global initiatives that promote experiential learning built around six themes – the Round Square IDEALS of International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

The second Friday of every month is dedicated to Round Square activities. We kicked off the school year with a focus on Internationalism, which is the idea that building international understanding through exposure to different ideas and cultures will help students to tackle real world issues and develop competencies far beyond what classroom learning alone can accomplish.

Students explored this theme by engaging in discussions with their tutors and teachers about what it means to be part of an International school. They then undertook research and created posters about important global inventions that have benefitted the world at large. Entries were varied and wonderful, ranging from aviation and artificial intelligence, to medical technology and vaccines.

Well done to all students on participating so enthusiastically. We look forward to many fun and innovative Round Square activities that will be held throughout the year.

Meet the new Faces at RBIS

Mrs Justine Bell

English and Year 10 Tutor

English, and Literature in particular, is my passion! Having taught in both UK state schools and several international schools for the last 12 years, I find that I learn new ideas and perspectives from my students each and every day... I have the pleasure of being a lifelong learner whilst at work!

I am excited to be a member of the RBIS community as the school's values very much mirror my own - the idea that we should strive to always aim higher, the importance that we place in being well-rounded and the opportunities that we provide for students to be leader.

Obviously, I am an avid reader, but I also enjoy the theatre and visual arts, as well as learning to knit. I enjoy playing netball and have a rediscovered love of badminton! I am looking forward to learning more about the culture of Thailand and the traditions of the country, all whilst enjoying the amazing food!

Mr. Tezel Asena

ICT, Business and Year 12 tutor

My name is Tezel Asena and my background is in computer science, ICT and business studies with a 1st class BSC in computing and animation as well as a 1st in MA Interactive Media at the University of Westminster, UK.

I have worked in the creative media industry as a virtual reality developer and multimedia designer for companies in London and Hong Kong and have also lectured at Universities such as the University of Westminster. I taught computer science in a selective school called GHCIS based in Shanghai  for 2 years and recently completed my PGCE in UCL (Institute of Education).

The main reason why I became a teacher was to inspire people at a very young age so they can use technology and computing through a business model to transform the world into a new image.

As an idealistic person, I try to make my lessons as creative as possible where I expose children to various areas, skills and subjects encouraging critical thinking, logic and creative thought which will help guide and build the foundations children will need to advance to their next chapter in life in the most efficient way.

Ms. Judith Reid

English and Year 13 tutor

My name is Ms Reid. I am thrilled to be a part of such an acclaimed academic community. The RBIS motto 'Aim even higher' mirrors my personal ethos, and as a teacher, I am always looking for ways to go above and beyond my limits.

I have experience teaching students of all ages and backgrounds in the UK, from complete beginners to advanced learners; this is my first time in an international school, and what a fantastic adventure it has been so far! I can definitely see why Thailand is named the 'land of smiles'.

My subject specialism is English language and literature, especially literature! Nurturing a passion for literature exercises the imagination. Students meet new characters, live in their world and experience their joys and sorrows. Having an active imagination has implications outside of the classroom as well. It helps the students to perceive truth, make judgements and deal with life as they grow. The possibilities are endless.

I love to motivate my students by making classroom-based learning a comfortable and enjoyable experience, allowing students the chance to express themselves and be proactive in their learning journey.

In my free time, when I am not reading or planning amazing lessons, I can be found on the BTS trying to find new adventures to inspire me, trying as much delicious street food along the way!

ECA Focus

Sign language

American Sign Language (ASL) is primarily used by deaf and hard of hearing individuals to communicate. However, many hearing individuals choose to learn and use sign language as well, as it helps improve cognitive and communication skills. Learning a new language is always a valuable life skill. ASL has various other benefits too, including helping children to develop empathy towards deaf and hearing impaired people.

This term, students from both primary and secondary have joined ASL. The first few weeks were spent on perfecting the sign alphabet and finger spelling words.

Students then learnt to introduce themselves and ask and answer basic questions such as “How are you?”, “What is your name?” and “I’m busy”. They particularly enjoyed doing two hand signs such as the sign for “how” and “match”.

Once students were able to transition a bit more fluently between signs, they moved on to learning songs. Starting with “Happy Birthday To You”, we quickly moved on to “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten. This was fun, but challenging. Students showed a great determination to learn and practiced really hard. They will be ready to show you a video of their performance by the end of Term 1, so watch our social media space for an update!
