Greetings from the Head of Secondary

Dear RBIS International School Community,

As we bid farewell to a dynamic and eventful December, I am delighted to reflect on the vibrant activities that enriched our final weeks of the term. Despite the condensed schedule, we experienced the thrill of Sports Day at the Thai Japanese Stadium on the 4th, witnessed the spectacular talents of our students at the Performing Arts Evening on the 7th at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, and embarked on an unforgettable Residential Trip to Khao Yai.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the parents for their unwavering support, which played a pivotal role in the success of these events. Your enthusiasm and encouragement truly make a difference in our school community.

As we approach the holiday season, I want to wish each and every one of you the very best for the upcoming new year. May it bring joy, success, and new opportunities.

Please take note that Term 2 will commence on the 8th of January. I look forward to another semester filled with exciting learning experiences and achievements.

The annual RBIS Performing Arts Evening

We are thrilled to share the resounding success of the RBIS Performing Arts Evening held on December 7th. The evening was a kaleidoscope of talent and creativity, featuring a diverse array of performances that captivated the audience. The stage came alive with two enthralling plays - "Dining with Dracula" and "A Skytrain Named Desire," showcasing the dramatic prowess of our students. From lively lip sync acts to mesmerizing dance routines, the evening celebrated the richness of our performing arts community. Students demonstrated their public speaking skills, engaged in compelling prose and poetry readings, and showcased their vocal talents through singing. The musical acts were equally impressive, featuring skillful performances on the harp, piano, and cello. It was truly a night to remember, highlighting the incredible talents and dedication of our students in the realm of performing arts. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all participants, teachers, and staff who contributed to making this evening a spectacular showcase of artistic brilliance.

The Residential Trip to Khao Yai

The annual Year 6 to 13 residential has been an exhilarating adventure! On the first day, after a comfortable bus ride to Khao Yai, students enjoyed a delicious lunch and settled into dorms. Year 6-9 had an amazing encounter with Asian elephants at a sanctuary, learning about conservation efforts and even participating in feeding and bathing these incredible animals! Simultaneously, Year 10-13 took on the challenge of crafting rafts, testing them in the pool, and conquering indoor wall climbing. The day concluded with a heartwarming BBQ, campfire, and a guided night walk in the forest, setting the tone for exciting adventures ahead.

Days 2 and 3 brought even more excitement at the RBIS annual residential!  Year 6-9 experienced the thrill of white water rafting, raft building, a low ropes challenge, and an epic water park adventure on day 3! Meanwhile, Year 10-13 immersed themselves in outdoor activities with kayaking and hiking on day 2, followed by a touching visit to a local Thai countryside school to share their English skills on day 3. Kudos to our incredible students for their adventurous spirits, and a big thank you to our dedicated teachers for creating unforgettable experiences!

Day 3

Sports Day

On December 4, early-years, primary, and secondary students enthusiastically took part in the RBIS Sports Day at Bangkok Stadium. The day commenced with a captivating parade, setting the stage for a series of exciting competitions. Demonstrating remarkable potential, all students showcased their abilities in a spectacular manner. The event painted a beautiful picture of unity, teamwork, and determination, as every student strived to lead their team to victory.

The competition kicked off with a challenging 200-meter sprint, where students pushed their limits to achieve their best times and earn valuable points for their house team. While the initial stretch seemed manageable, the final 50 meters posed a real test of the participants' physical endurance. A hearty congratulations to all who took part in this demanding race.

Following the sprint was a unique blindfolded game that engaged senses beyond sight. Students, relying on trust and effective communication, guided blindfolded teammates through obstacles to reach the finish line. This activity emphasized the importance of teamwork and showcased the participants' ability to navigate challenges with precision.

The pinnacle of the day was the 100-meter run, a spirited event in which all students enthusiastically participated. Witnessing the astonishing speed and determination of each runner was a true highlight, as they collectively scored significant points for their respective houses. Well done to all the students for their outstanding performances in making the sports day a memorable success!

Tug of war, a sport demanding every student's full strength to pull down the opposing team, showcased impressive displays of power. The teams engaged in a fierce back-and-forth, tugging at the ropes for several intense minutes.

The ball-balancing game followed, requiring seamless teamwork as four participants collaborated to keep the ball on the mat. This seemingly simple task proved challenging when competing against other teams, emphasizing the importance of coordination and cooperation.

The climax of the sports day was a football match between the staff and students. This highly intense game witnessed both groups giving their all in pursuit of victory. Despite the students' advantage in sheer strength, the staff team emerged victorious under the leadership of our dedicated physical education teacher, Coach Charmil.

The day's events not only showcased the physical prowess of our students but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and strategy in achieving success. Well done to everyone for making the sports day a memorable and spirited occasion!

The day concluded with the presentation of medals to the teams based on their total scores. The first-place winner is Dragon, followed by the Lions as the first runner-up, Unicorn as the second runner-up, and Phoenix as the third runner-up. Congratulations to all the participants for their outstanding efforts! Well done! 🏅👏

Community service trips

Visit to Wat Pin Kaew School (Y.12-13)

On Friday 1st December students from our sixth Form went to visit the children at Pinkaew School, Ayutthaya. Their task was to take donations kindly given by the RBIS community in our Christmas Charity Appeal to help children in need. They also took stationery which had been donated as a result of our Bake sale in September.

Upon arrival they presented the stationery items to the director of the school, Ms.Wilaiwan. After this they set up some games and activities for the children; Knock-down the Cans, Bounce the Ping Pong ball into the Carton and an art activity. The children thoroughly enjoyed the games where they had the opportunity to win prizes as well. Every opportunity was given to allow all the children to try out all the activities and games. Next the children were given a bag of snacks, Christmas cards and a toy each. They were so happy to receive their gifts and the 6th form enjoyed handing them out. To finish there were two teddy bears waiting to be won. All the children's names  were in a hat and two lucky children won a teddy bear each as their names were pulled out.

One of the children from the school gave a short speech thanking the 6th form for visiting and giving out gifts to them. It was then time for lunch and a short meeting with the director and teachers to begin the build up to the sixth form Community Service Residential to be held in June 2024 (more details will be given at a later date).

Our thanks to Poom, Awei, Mariha, Jericho, Le’pain, Hans and Hugo for visiting the children. They did a wonderful job and should be proud of giving children from Pinkaew School a day to remember.

Thanks also to Ms Vanessa, Kru Kai and Mr Reed for joining the 6th Form for such a fantastic event.

HOUSES @ RBIS

4 houses

The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.

Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.

Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary or Secondary sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains  (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

House events at Secondary (December) :

Chess finals

In the final chess showdown between two Dragon members, Pune and Kaopun in KS3, Pune secured a glorious victory in a strategically charged final. The match unfolded with calculated moves and tactical precision, culminating in Pune's decisive win. The House Dragon added a unique twist to the game, creating an atmosphere of intense competition as Pune emerged as the champion!

Meanwhile, from the upper school, we have had some intense and shocking results between all houses. Ping Ping of house Unicorn managed to swiftly mop Pin in year 10 from house Phoenix, breaking all odds. On the other side, Sinchan representing house Phoenix defeated Win from house Dragon. The final is drawing closer now, but just like teams in the Premier league, there are no favourites this year because we've had a lot of surprises.

Table Tennis tournament

The table tennis tournament for both KS3 and KS4  has been a rollercoaster with many candidates already being knocked out of the tournament and a potential winner appearing just above the horizon.

Badminton

Mr.  De Smet VS. Son

The grand finale between Mr. De Smet, the reigning champion of the 22/23 teachers' Badminton tournament, and Son, the current 23/24 student titleholder, has concluded. It proved to be an intense and closely contested match, with both players showcasing their skills. However, in the final moments, Son's Messi-style vision and precision proved to be the decisive factor, securing him a narrow but significant and glorious victory.

ROUND SQUARE @ RBIS

RBIS is proud to announce it is a global member member of ROUND SQUARE which is a prestigious international organisation with schools in over 50 countries, across six continents.

It focuses on holistic education practices through the following six key IDEALS:

Internationalism: Students are taught to value and respect all cultures, religions and languages. They learn to see themselves as global citizens and are asked to look beyond gender, class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.

Democracy: Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are in place for students to voice their views. Students are also taught to appreciate the importance of self-discipline and are trained and expected to share in the responsibility for development of the school.

Environment: Round Square students are expected to demonstrate concern for all natural environments, to be aware of proven problems and to play a practical role in tackling environmental issues. Students are taught the interdependence needed to maintain a healthy relationship between human beings and the planet.

Adventure: Building character through adventure, meeting physical challenges and developing an appreciation of the outdoors: these are all central to Round Square schools.

Leadership: Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the school community are fostered extensively.

Service: This is the key element utilised by Round Square schools to prepare students for life through the expectation of serving others. Students commit themselves to local, regional and international service projects.

Community service at Secondary (December) :

Our 7th "pick up"  - once again we had many bags full of recyclables. Thank you to all those who are bringing in plastic recyclables for Cirplas.  Some of you now understand the importance of "reduce"   "reuse" and  "recycle"  Keep bringing in recyclables; it gets you community service points and house points. The more the better.

Ploy Bunlangkarn who graduated from RBIS in 2020

“I have been an RBIS student for as long as I can remember and have experienced all of the changes it went through as an academic institution and as a home for me and many other students.

After graduating Year 13 and completing my A levels, it was time to say goodbye to Thailand and leave for Sydney, Australia to study a fast-track Bachelor of Animation course at the SAE Institute, entering my second year of studying at this place.

During my study for Bachelor of Animation, I have met many likeminded people from all walks of life and have made many friends which makes the learning process much more enjoyable for me. My most prominent teachers were David and Rafi, both industry professionals who have taught me much about animation, in theory and practice, both of which are incredibly important to learn about.

RBIS has really prepared me for university life, and I have found myself enjoying my time on campus and I value the experiences that I had in RBIS.”

Ploy has shared some of her animation work with us.

ECA Focus

Coding

Coding club was introduced as an ECA to help students develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills using the most efficient methods. We have covered various fields such as sequence, selection, iteration, functions, modules, classes and much more through various mini projects and assignments.

Coding with Python is an excellent choice for school curricula due to its readability, simplicity, and versatility. Python's clean syntax and straightforward structure make it accessible for beginners, allowing them to grasp fundamental programming concepts without being overwhelmed by complex syntax. The language's usefulness across various areas, including web development, data science, and artificial intelligence, positions students to explore diverse aspects of computer science. Additionally, Python's widespread adoption in the industry enhances students' employability, providing them with practical skills that directly align with real-world applications. The language's large and active community ensures ample online resources and support, facilitating a collaborative learning environment.

From a cognitive standpoint, learning to code, especially with Python, fosters essential skills. It encourages logical thinking by requiring individuals to create sequences of instructions to solve problems and break down complex tasks into manageable parts, in computer science, this is known as decomposition . The problem-solving nature of coding cultivates critical thinking skills, algorithmic thinking, and a structured approach to addressing challenges. Coding also stimulates creativity, allowing students to express themselves through the development of unique applications and projects. Attention to detail becomes crucial in coding, as small errors can lead to bugs, instilling a habit of meticulous work. Moreover, the process of debugging and troubleshooting teaches persistence and patience, valuable qualities applicable beyond the realm of programming, contributing to a well-rounded skill set for students.
