Secondary Newsletter

Greetings from the Head of Secondary

Dear Parents, Students, and RBIS Community,

I hope that all families had a wonderful Songkran break together. Despite there only being 2 and a half school weeks in April due to the two-week Songkran break, there were still plenty of events and opportunities in which students actively participated.

Before the break, we experienced a full day of Thai New Year celebrations. From giving alms to monks to engaging in water fights and foam parties, it was an extraordinary day that will be cherished by many.

Upon the children's return from the break, our Year 7 to 9 students sat Chinese HSK mock exams. Following this, the younger students participated in the annual UK Mathematics Trust competition. The results will be shared in the next edition of the Secondary newsletter.

On April 26th, we dedicated a whole afternoon to student well-being sessions, where they could select and sign up for sessions of interest. Please see below to find out more about this and all the other events that ook place.

I am delighted to announce that our Year 13 students were shortlisted as the top 10 global finalists for the prestigious Round Square Kurt Hahn Service Award. We are incredibly proud of their achievement. Many thanks to Ms Paliwala and Mr Reed for their support.

As we move forward, we wish all our students who are sitting exams next month successful preparation.

Songkran celebrations (5th of April)

This year, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture Organization (UNESCO) officially recognized the Songkran festival as a cultural heritage.

Therefore, RBIS organized a bigger Songkran celebration than in previous years. Students of all years participated in activities at this event. Our students learned some Thai traditional activities for example, in the morning we made merit by offering alms to Buddhist monks called “Thambun Takbaat” and Pouring water on the hands of revered elders called “Rodnarm Dumhua” and pouring water on Buddha statues.

We also had a Thai performance show for all-year students, from the Secondary school students presented Thai children's games 'Mon Sorn Pha' and 'Re Re Khao San' through the performance of 'Sawadee Chaiyo'.

Throughout the day, Thai food, desserts, and snacks were provided, which allowed our students and parents to experience the traditional flavors of Songkran. We thank our students and the Thai department for their efforts in making this a memorable day for all involved.

In the end, the most enjoyable activity for our students was the "Foam Party and Water Fights" on the football pitch. The students had a blast playing with foam and water while soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Chinese YCT & HSK mock exam week (23rd - 25th April)

UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge (25th of April)

The UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple choice challenge.  Students are allowed a plain sheet of paper and pen/pencil to help solve the questions; squared paper, calculators and measuring instruments are forbidden. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think; most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

Students from Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 recently participated in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.  We are proud of our students' efforts, and we look forward to sharing the results of the challenge in the next edition of the newsletter; we hope that their hard work and dedication pay off.

Student Wellbeing Day (26th of April)

On the 26th of April, RBIS Secondary hosted a Student Wellbeing Afternoon aimed at providing our Y.6 to 13 students with valuable insights and tools to support their mental and emotional health. The afternoon consisted of four 30-minute sessions, allowing students to explore multiple topics relevant to their wellbeing. Prior to the event, students were invited to participate in a Google survey, where they could anonymously select the interactive sessions they wished to attend.

The sessions covered a wide range of important topics, including consent and boundary setting, puberty and changes, drugs and alcohol, friendships (healthy and unhealthy), personal identity, safe and unsafe image sharing (online), understanding mental illnesses, and coping strategies such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, students had the opportunity to suggest other topics of interest for future events, providing valuable feedback for planning purposes.

We extend our gratitude to our dedicated teaching staff for their informative presentations and commend Ms. Wild for her outstanding organization of the event. Overall, the Student Wellbeing Afternoon was a significant step towards promoting a supportive and nurturing environment for our students' holistic development.

Trips

Photography trip: Santhipap park/Victory Monument (2nd of April)

On the 2nd of April students from Year 10, 12, and 13 embarked on a photography trip to Santhipap Park, followed by a walking tour around Victory Monument. The aim of this excursion was to capture the contrast between natural and man-made objects. Specifically for Year 12 and 13 students, street photography is a topic in their photography portfolio (HSD). We ventured out in the early morning before the heat became overwhelming and succeeded in capturing some compelling and valuable images. It was a delightful morning.

What's Going on?

Year 7 Geography

In Year 7 Geography lessons this month, our students have been immersed in the fascinating world of rivers. Through a series of engaging activities, they have explored the various aspects of river systems, from their formation to their impact on the environment and human civilization. Students have delved into the processes of erosion, transportation, and deposition, gaining a deeper understanding of how rivers shape the landscape over time.

Moreover, students have had the opportunity to investigate the significance of rivers in different geographical contexts, from the mighty Amazon River to the meandering Chao Phraya closer to home.

Through map work, discussions, and multimedia resources, they have analyzed the role of rivers in providing water resources, supporting agriculture, and facilitating transportation and trade.

Year 8 Chinese

This week, we organized a word game competition in the Year 8 Chinese class. The students were divided into four teams to guess the words. Each lesson featured one round of the word competition, and the scores were tallied after three rounds. Subsequently, a lottery was conducted based on the rankings. Our Chinese teacher, Mr. Wang, prepared some small prizes and crafted scratch cards himself, aiming to boost students' enthusiasm for memorizing words. Through this fun and engaging game, we not only reviewed the words we had learned but also reinforced our memory of them.

Year 9 English

This month, Year 9 students delved into a comparative analysis of Malorie Blackman's 'Noughts and Crosses, the rap song "Black" by Dave, and the article "Britain isn't racist" by British headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh. Their analysis focused on how each writer and artist conveys their attitudes towards institutional racism in modern Britain, utilising different mediums to express similar themes or divergent viewpoints. The students explored whether the themes addressed by Blackman, Dave, and Birbalsingh were similar or different and analysed how each presented their message about racism. They critically assessed the tone and delivery of each piece, noting the stark contrasts in how each creator presents their attitude towards institutional racism—Dave with a poignant and evocative lyrical approach compared to Birbalsingh's arguably defensive article tone. Furthermore, the students examined the methods each used to engage their audience, reflecting on how the medium—novel, song, or article—shapes the delivery and reception of their messages.

What's Going on?

Year 10 IGCSE Thai

Cambridge IGCSE First Language Thai is tailored for learners whose native language is Thai, comprising two papers: Paper 1, which encompasses Reading and Directed Writing, and Paper 2, focusing on Composition. In Paper 1, students encounter structured and extended writing questions derived from three Thai passages. Following comprehension of these passages, students provide accurate responses. The most challenging aspects for students often include Thai idioms, advanced vocabulary, and academic writing.

Throughout this academic year, we have diligently delved into comprehending and articulating Thai idioms, advanced vocabulary, and academic writing through a variety of learning activities such as presentations, discussions, and intensive writing on academic research topics. Additionally, we have utilised the Thai dictionary from the Royal Society as a point of reference. We are optimistic that our students will achieve commendable scores in this section.

Year 11 IGCSE business studies

We are now preparing for the Busines studies examinations by reviewing and analysing past exam papers.

To truly maximize learning, it's essential to cross-reference answers with the mark scheme. This allows students to understand exactly what examiners are looking for and helps them identify areas where they can improve. By comparing responses to the mark scheme, you'll gain valuable insights into the level of detail, structure, and key points required to earn top marks.

In essence, practicing past papers and cross-referencing with the mark scheme is like having a roadmap to exam success.

Year 12 PE

Our Year 12 students have been engaging in boxing lessons during PE this month. Prior to each session, students typically engage in a series of warm-up exercises to prepare their muscles for the upcoming workout. This routine may involve stretching, jogging, other dynamic movements, and playing games to enhance reaction time. We have covered fundamental boxing skills such as the jab, cross, hook, uppercut, and various other movements, as well as team-based exercises. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have further honed their sporting abilities.

  Year 13 Swimming

Getting ready for the competition!!! Year 13 students have undergone extensive long-distance swimming training in the past. To enhance their swimming skills, techniques, and physical fitness, they have been practicing swimming continuously for 20 minutes, incorporating jumping techniques, underwater dives, and underwater flip-turns.

We are now eagerly anticipating the upcoming competition at RBIS. At this stage, they need to concentrate on speed development drills. They will also encounter numerous physical challenges as they strive to claim victory in the race. Let's do it!!!!

HOUSES @ RBIS

4 houses

The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.

Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.

Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary or Secondary sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains  (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

House events at Secondary (April) :

E-sports FIFA (EFC) tournament

We've had two exciting games so far! In the first match, Mr. Asena from Phoenix faced off against Jericho from Phoenix. At first, Mr. Asena underestimated Jericho, and had to unleash his inner super saiyan mode to secure a 5-1 victory. On the flip side, Peam from House Lion, who was expected to defeat Pin from House Phoenix, ended up losing in a penalty shootout after both teams put up a strong defensive game.

ROUND SQUARE @ RBIS

RBIS is proud to announce it is a global member member of ROUND SQUARE which is a prestigious international organisation with schools in over 50 countries, across six continents.

It focuses on holistic education practices through the following six key IDEALS:

Internationalism: Students are taught to value and respect all cultures, religions and languages. They learn to see themselves as global citizens and are asked to look beyond gender, class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.

Democracy: Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are in place for students to voice their views. Students are also taught to appreciate the importance of self-discipline and are trained and expected to share in the responsibility for development of the school.

Environment: Round Square students are expected to demonstrate concern for all natural environments, to be aware of proven problems and to play a practical role in tackling environmental issues. Students are taught the interdependence needed to maintain a healthy relationship between human beings and the planet.

Adventure: Building character through adventure, meeting physical challenges and developing an appreciation of the outdoors: these are all central to Round Square schools.

Leadership: Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the school community are fostered extensively.

Service: This is the key element utilised by Round Square schools to prepare students for life through the expectation of serving others. Students commit themselves to local, regional and international service projects.

Alumni of the month

Pongnatchakorn (Kenny) Wongtiraporn who graduated from RBIS in 2023

I joined RBIS International School in 2021. I was a student there until Year 13 and graduated with the High School Diploma in 2023. During my time in RBIS, I discovered a lot about who I am. RBIS taught me how to be a hard-working person and how to keep on track with my work or assignment, even when it's challenging.  I'm appreciative of the encounters and memories I've made along the way in RBIS. It helped me become a more self-assured and self-sufficient person; I'm pleased with the progress I made.

Now I am overseas. For my first year, I’m studying Law at the University of Essex International College, and I'm ready to proceed to the Essex Law School, University of Essex, for my second year. In my first year studying law, sometimes I found it hard to understand the wording used in law as I have never studied in this field before, but I am trying my best to achieve a good result. In addition, the lecturers and my peers help me if I get stuck somewhere. And according to this pleasurable academic environment, I'm feeling that I am getting on with this course quickly.

The biggest challenge that I faced as an international student who studied overseas was culture shock. This comes from different food, different languages, and the different climate. In the beginning, I found it was difficult to make new friends as they were of different nationalities and totally different cultures, but it was not a big problem; I soon settled.

Finally, for the students who want to study overseas or are still deciding, you will need time to settle in a new country with different cultures and environments, but I'm pretty sure you will be fine and succeed; I managed!
