Overtourism happens when too many tourists1 visit the same place at one time. This situation2 can damage the environment and also cause problems for the local communities3. Undoubtedly4, overtourism is something everyone should consider when planning a trip.

Barcelona, Spain, is one example of a place suffering from overtourism. While hosting the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona grabbed the world’s attention. Since then, people have traveled to the city in increasingly large numbers. As a result, some apartment owners have kicked locals out of rented apartments so that they can charge tourists higher rent. Furthermore, visitors often disturb5 residents6 with noise at night, and residents are fed up with the lack7 of respect for their city. Therefore, city officials have limited the number of travelers and restricted8 the development of new hotels.

Machu Picchu in Peru is another victim9 of overtourism. In 2007, Machu Picchu was selected10 as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This honor attracted tourists from all over the world, which has led to a negative impact11. For example, tourists left tons of waste. Moreover, one natural spot was destroyed12 to build a parking lot. To reduce the impact, Peru’s government limits the length of time visitors can stay. In addition, all visitors must be accompanied13 by a tour guide.

Still another famous spot is Boracay in the Philippines. In the 1970s, two popular movies were filmed on this island. A few years later, it was introduced in famous magazines. Travelers began flocking14 to Boracay’s famous beaches. Before long, waste from these travelers caused pollution and other problems. Animals and plants were also threatened. In 2018, the president decided to close Boracay for six months to repair15 the damage done to the environment.

The more we learn about overtourism, the more we can see that it is a serious problem. Governments should take measures16 to deal with it and reduce the negative impact of tourism, and everyone should attempt17 to be a responsible18 tourist.
