Reading

A young man and an old man shared a hospital room. The young man was recovering from eye surgery. The old man was sick because of a brain disease1. Both men needed to stay in bed, so they talked all the time and became2 friends.

Every morning, a nurse would bring them breakfast and open the window. Because the young man couldn’t see anything, the old man would describe3 all the things outside the window to him every day.

“It’s a lovely4 day. Couples5 are walking around the lake. Kids are playing on the grass. Don’t worry; you’ll see all these things soon,” the old man said to the young man.

Day after day, the old man described the view6 in detail. The young man would then imagine7 the world outside.

Finally, the young man was able to remove8 his bandages. Before the nurse came to guide him out of the room, the young man said to the old man, “When I return9, we can enjoy the view together10!”

However, when the young man returned, the old man was not there. “He passed away in his sleep,” the nurse said. The young man went to the old man’s bed and looked out the window. He was shocked11; there was only a wall there. “The old man couldn’t see anything,” the nurse said. “He was blind12.”

Tears fell from the young man’s eyes. “Thank you,” he whispered.
