There is a big issue1 with education in Bangladesh, a country in South Asia. In Bangladesh, heavy rains result in severe2 flooding3 every year. These floods can shut down thousands of schools at a time for months. With no classes available4, many children have no access5 to education. Fortunately, an effective6 solution has been found: boat schools!
Mohammed Rezwan, founder of the boat school program
The idea of a boat school came from my childhood. I grew up in a place where floods happened all the time. During the rainy season, I could go to school only by boat. That’s why we created these floating classrooms. Each boat is about fifteen meters long and three meters wide. With tables, chairs, a blackboard, electronic7 equipment, and digital8 resources provided, each boat school has the same facilities9 as a regular classroom. In addition, we install10 solar panels on the roof so that the boat can power its lights and computers.
Mili Akhand, teacher
Each boat school has space for up to thirty students. Every morning, the boat picks up elementary school students for class. When the class is over, the boat takes the students back to their village. Then, it sails on to the next village, where another thirty students are waiting for their class.
Rashida Khatun, parent
Apart from providing classes for the kids, boat schools are also put to use in the evenings, offering adult classes and showing educational films. These floating classrooms improve our quality of life. They offer lectures11 about health, farming techniques12, and even financial13 management14. These lectures help us grow more food and earn more money throughout the year.
The boat school concept15 has now been adopted in other countries at similar risk16 of environmental problems, including Cambodia, Nigeria, and the Philippines. Rezwan’s idea has made it possible for many people to overcome weather-related hardships17 and receive a proper education.
