Reading

I am a plastic1 bag. I was born in a factory. After I was sent to a convenience2 store, I stayed there for a long time, waiting eagerly3 to be used. One day, some kids came along and bought some snacks which were also covered with plastic. They put the snacks into me and brought me to the beach for a picnic. When it got dark, they packed everything up and left but forgot one thing—me. The wind started to blow, and suddenly I was in the sea!

I floated helplessly on the surface4 of the water for a while. Soon I realized5 I wasn’t alone but was surrounded6 by plastic cups, plates, and straws. The next morning, I woke up in a big and dark room. In it were lots of plastic things. “What happened?” I asked a fork next to me. “A huge fish swallowed7 us!” he replied.

We obviously8 weren’t that nutritious9 because, after a few days, the fish died. Its body slowly disappeared and then I was back in the ocean. Weeks later, a big wave came and tossed me onto the shore again.

One day, some schoolchildren came and put me in a bag. “Plastic, which never goes away, can do a lot of harm10,” their teacher said. “It usually ends up in the ocean and can be consumed11 by sea creatures. When we eat seafood, the poisons12 from the plastic end up inside us!”

Thanks to those school kids, the humans are going to recycle13 me properly14. That’s good news for me because I’m tired of floating around, killing fish, and damaging the environment.
