Last year’s student exchange2 program3 really opened my eyes to the cultural differences between Taiwan and my country. The best part of the trip was attending4 a local wedding banquet with my host family.
When we arrived at the banquet, I expected to see a large dining hall. But to my surprise, I saw people sitting at big round tables right out on the street! A large tent was also put up to protect the guests from the sun. Although it occupied5 nearly half the street, nobody seemed to mind. Under the tent, I could see cooks and assistants6 preparing large plates of food.
I was curious7 about this custom of “open-air” banquets, so I asked my host parents how such feasts had first come about. They explained that this kind of banquet, or “ban-doh” in Taiwanese, originated in the countryside. In the old days, people had always celebrated8 events9 by working together to arrange10 a ban-doh. The host would prepare all the ingredients, and neighbors would help with the cooking, or provide tables, chairs, plates, and so on. It was all about enjoying a sense of togetherness.
At the end of the banquet, guests would pack up their leftovers. Since it was usually late at night, the host would hand out torches to help them light their way home. Older people in Taiwan still remember seeing lines of guests going home with their lights and food in their hands.
Although some aspects11 of the ban-doh have changed in modern12 times, the spirit13 of gathering14 together still remains15. Being able to attend the wedding gave me the opportunity16 to experience this for myself. All in all, it was a feast both for the stomach and the eyes!
