How do you feel when you see a bee flying around? What does that little bee mean to you? Have you ever imagined what a world without bees would look like? A recent1 discovery2 suggests that humans have been making use of bees for at least nine thousand years. That relationship is crucial3 to our food supply4. Without bees, our entire5 food system would fall apart.
One of the most important jobs bees do is pollination. As they fly from flower to flower, they carry and spread pollen, which helps produce new plants. Thus, without bees, about half of our food supply would be gone. Various6 fruit and vegetables, such as apples, kiwis, cabbages, and pumpkins, would not be seen anymore. Moreover, dairy and meat products would eventually disappear since we also depend on bees to help grow the crops fed to farm animals. If bees vanished, we would find it very difficult to produce enough food in the long run.
The disappearance of bees may result from various problems, such as air pollution7, global warming, and vanishing natural resources8. One main contributing9 factor10 is pesticides. Plants treated with some pesticides pass poisonous chemicals11 on to bees. These bees then suffer brain damage and may not know how to find food or where to go. What’s worse, when bees carrying these harmful chemicals return home, they can kill the rest of their colony. Over the past fifty years, the total number of bees worldwide has reduced12 by almost half!
Bees may be small, but they play a huge role in maintaining13 nature’s fine balance14. Thus, they should be cherished15 and clearly deserve16 our protection. If these busy little creatures disappear, our entire food chain will be affected. What’s more, the life that exists17 on this planet would never bee the same!
