Did you know that the shoes you wear and the coffee you drink could be connected to ancient2 mythology? Although those stories may not seem related3 to anything in the modern world, many famous companies actually use mythology in their names and logos.
Nike, for example, has a company name that can be traced back to Greek mythology. One of the company’s founders4 chose the name because Nike was the goddess of victory5. She was considered6 a very fast runner. She also had the power to lead others to victory in battle. The founder’s intention7 was to use the connection to make the company’s products more attractive8 to athletes9. He hoped that customers would relate the brand name to excellent performance10 in sports. In other words, he wanted people who run in Nike shoes to feel as if they were blessed by Nike herself.
As for Starbucks, it is the company’s logo that comes from Greek mythology. Starbucks was founded in Seattle, which is one of the United States’ largest seaports. Coffee beans from all over the world arrive at this port. While looking through some books about the sea, the designer of the Starbucks logo came across an image of a siren. In Greek mythology, sirens were magical creatures assumed11 to have beautiful voices. Sirens would sit on the shore singing, and sailors in passing ships would be drawn to their voices. Starbucks hopes that its coffee will appeal12 to its customers in the same way.
Nike and Starbucks both make clever13 use of Greek mythology. By doing so, they invite consumers to associate14 their brands with the magical qualities15 of these famous figures16. The ancient Greeks may be long gone, but their stories are still all around us.
