Most people have habits or behaviors1 that they would like to change for the better. However, such changes aren’t always easy to make. According to some experts2, the key is to make change fun.
Let’s look at a simple part of daily life: crossing the street. People often ignore the “red man” light signal3. This can lead to accidents4. To improve5 road safety6, a car company put up a different light in Lisbon, Portugal. Instead of standing still, this new “red man” started to dance when the light turned red. Seeing the red-light signal dancing, pedestrians7 felt curious and stopped to watch or even dance with it. As a result, more than 80% of people were willing to wait a little longer before crossing the road. It was by adding a little fun that the experiment8 was successful.
At a busy subway9 station in Stockholm, Sweden, another fun change was made to people’s daily lives. The goal of this was to encourage subway users to take the stairs instead of the escalators. In the experiment, regular stairs were changed to look like giant10 piano keys. When people stepped on the stairs, each would make a sound. Because of the fun change, many chose to climb the stairs. The number of people who used the stairs went up by 66%! Again, it was the musical11 stairs that had encouraged people to change.
As you can see, most people are happy to join in the fun when ordinary12 activities13 become more entertaining. There are different ways to add a little fun to daily routines14, and the changes can be big or small. The important thing is that they promote15 positive behaviors by making people feel good, safe and healthy.
