Welcome aboard1 , everyone! I’m Rosa, your guide for today. During our twenty-minute ride to the Statue of Liberty, I’m going to tell you what this impressive2 monument3 is all about.
In 1886, America received4 a very special gift from France to celebrate its independence5. The gift stood 151 feet tall, which is about the height of 15 floors. Due to its great size, the statue took years to complete. The right arm with the torch was created first, and the head was constructed6 later. After all of the parts were done, the statue was cut into hundreds of pieces and shipped to New York. The pieces were put together there so that this grand7 statue could be displayed8 to the world.
Okay, if you look to your left, you should have a clear view of Lady Liberty now. You’ll see that she’s holding a giant torch. The torch symbolizes9 the idea that Lady Liberty can guide the world. In her left hand is a tablet with the date of America’s independence. Apart from the torch and the tablet, she has a crown on her head and broken chains at her feet. These are important symbols. The seven spikes on the crown represent10 the rays of the sun. Also, you may have already figured out that the broken chains symbolize freedom11. What’s more, the statue’s creators12 were inspired by the Roman goddess of freedom, and that is why Lady Liberty is dressed in a classical13 Roman robe.
Well, here we are. Please watch your step when you get off! Oh, and one piece of advice14: I would recommend15 that you take the stairs up to the crown. If you climb up there, you will find a great view of Lower Manhattan to admire16. Thanks, everybody. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have, and enjoy your visit!
