What will I study?
Unlike psychology - which is the study of mind and individual behaviour - sociology is the study of structures in society and social behaviour. It examines how we are influenced and shaped through being members of groups and organisations. It concentrates on: the way we make society what it is; and the way society makes us what we are. It is an exciting and dynamic subject that is interesting and relevant to everyone. We study: FAMILY; EDUCATION; CRIME; BELIEFS; THEORY & METHODS.
How will I be assessed?
You will sit three two-hour exams after a two-year course. There is no coursework. 45k students sit sociology nationally (the UK’s 5th most popular subject) and one of the most popular at QPCS. The exam board is AQA which is very well resourced. The same two teachers have been teaching Sociology for twenty years and have a proven track record of engaging and enabling students.
Where might it lead?
A large proportion of A Level students go on the study Sociology at University. Employers value the skills Sociology teaches you. Being able to challenge assumptions, interpret and analyse data, recognise constructs or bias, evaluate and express yourself explicitly. Sociology naturally leads into: journalism, education, social services, law, market research, government, politics, social enterprise, youth services, non-profit and any occupation that requires you to make sense of the social world whilst wanting to make an impact upon it.
