BACKGROUND:
Joel Meyerowitz was born in the Bronx to his father, Hy Meyerowitz. He studied art history, medical illustration, and art at Ohio State University. Meyerowitz also went to City University of New York and Hunter College. He graduated in 1959 and married and English Novelist named Maggie Barrett. They live in New York City, but also have a home outside of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. They have two children named Ariel Meyerowitz and Sasha Dorje Meyerowitz.
PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER:
First inspired by Robert Frank, Meyerowitz quit his art director job and began photography. His first camera was a 35 mm camera and color film. Meyerowitz mainly did street photography. His main influences were Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eugene Atget. Meyerowitz alternated between color and black and white photography, but permanently used color in 1972. Joel Meyerowitz is prominently seen in the 2006 documentary series called The Genius of Photography and the 2013 documentary Finding Vivian Maier. Meyerowitz wrote a total of 26 books about the art of color photography. One project that Meyerowitz conducted was photographing the aftermath of the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Centers aka the Twin Towers. Meyerowitz won the Guggenheim Follow twice, the National Endowment fir the Arts award, the National Endowment for the Humanities award, and many more.
