Cultural Competency Diversity Equity and Inclusion

Welcome!

Tacoma Public Schools is proud to partner with the University of Puget Sound and the Race & Pedagogy Institute to bring greater understanding and knowledge of the Cultural Competency, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion standards provided by the Professional Educators Standards Board.

As we continue to grow as professional leaders, we want to create space that is safe, welcoming, and allow opportunities for authentic reflection about our practices and interactions with other colleagues, students, families, and community partners. It is not a question of if or when we engage in work toward more equitable educational systems, but how and at what level of growth we enter the work. Whether we come as a public school participant or from a higher education perspective, whether we are a new learner or an advanced learner the goal is to create systems that lead to an inclusive environment, a culture of learning, and better academic outcomes for ALL students.

The modules can be completed as stand-alone experiences to be done individually, but it is highly encouraged that you also form a 1:1 or small group to have further dialogue with peers and share ideas about how you might apply some of the content learned.

There is a reflective form to complete at the end of each module. It is not to monitor the correctness of your responses because these are personal reflections. It is, however, to provide evidence of your engagement with the content to meet workshop requirements for clock hours and evidence that we provided the proper opportunity for engagement districtwide. If you do not want to include your name on the form, that is your choice. However, we suggest you choose to receive a receipt of your responses as a Forms option to reference when implementing what you learned.

Thank you to the University of Puget Sound for creating these informative modules. We appreciate your work and continued partnership. Have a great day.

Purpose of the Cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion (CCDEI) standards initiative

A major component of advancing equity in education is ensuring that each and every student learns from well-prepared educators. As such, a critical step in an educator’s preparation journey is their ability to demonstrate cultural responsiveness, and center diversity, equity, and inclusion in the ways they support their students, statewide standards coupled with voluntary professional development opportunities allow educators to equip themselves with the tools they need to do this.
