A sample project presented for a Leaving Cert question. The project celebrates exploration, creativity, realisation and self-discipline. Through their individual project-work, students build resilience and critical thinking skills that will support their future careers in any field.
This is done in class over a period from January until March/April.
Initial Research Sheet: In this sheet students are encouraged to explore a theme using mind-mapping. This will become the basis for the rest of the project
Development Sheet 1 for Still life/Imaginative composition: In this sheet students are encouraged to explore primary sources through drawing.
Development Sheet 2 for Still life/Imaginative composition: In this sheet students are encouraged to explore layouts for a final composition developing further the drawings that began in DS1.
Development Sheet 1 for Craftwork/Design: In this sheet students are again encouraged to explore primary sources through drawing for the development of 1 from a choice of many Crafts or Designs.
Development Sheet 2 for Craftwork/Design: In this sheet students develop their ideas for their realised craft or Design and make a final proposal for their Craft or Design.

Final Craftwork/Design: Students produce a final Craftwork/Design based on the studies undertaken in DS1 and DS2.
Students are expected to draw the human figure from observation in a timed Exam. This is done after the project and before the main Leaving Cert Examination takes place in June.
In this quick study, the student aims to capture the pose and form of the full human figure while cognisant of the use of space on the page
In this longer study, the student has a choice to capture the full pose or the half body with more attention paid to detail.
The leaving Cert project in art begins in January of sixth year and continues for between 10-12 weeks. This carries 50% of the marks. The life sketching is a timed exam generally held in May and carries 12.5% of the marks. The Art History component generally comprises 3 questions from a wide choice and is a timed exam held in June with the rest of the Leaving Cert exams. The Art history exam carries 37.5% of the marks.
