Independent Study Contracts
What are Independent Study Contracts? Click the link to find out more!
Valley View's Independent Study (IS) Process Update
To keep our Independent Study paperwork organized and consistent, all IS contracts will be managed through Pamela in the front office. Please review the process and guidelines carefully:
Parents may request an IS contract at least 10 calendar days before the start of the absence.
IS contracts will not be approved for absences requested with fewer than 10 calendar days’ notice. Please do not promise parents a contract if it does not meet this requirement.
Parents may request only one IS contract per school year.
Regardless of IS approval, students will always be provided make-up work for any absence.
IS contracts are for up to 15 consecutive days.
Parents complete and sign the IS contract in the front office. The student must also sign.
Once the contract is approved by administration and signed by all parties, teachers will gather the student’s work.
Independent Study is meant to approximate what a student misses during their absence.
Work time must total at least 4 hours per day (grades 4–12) or 3.83 hours per day (TK–3) in order to count for attendance.
On the contract, teachers must clearly write:
The subject and specific lesson
The task(s) the student needs to complete
The estimated time required
Completed work should be dropped off at the office for parents to pick up the school day before the start of the IS contract.
Students must return all completed work on the day they return to school for it to count toward attendance. Late work cannot be accepted.
When students return their work to Pamela, she will place it in the teacher’s box.
Teachers will have the same number of days as the IS contract covered, plus one additional day, to grade the work and return it to the office, along with the signed IS contract.
Excused vs Unexcused Absences
Starting with attendance on August 25, 2025, unexcused absences will be accounted for to produce truancy letters. Letter 1 is sent after 3 unexcused absences, Letter 2 after 6+ unexcused absences and Letter 3 after 9+ unexcused absences.
Please note: Notifying the school that your child is absent does not excuse your child from school. ONLY absence reasons that are listed by the law as excused are counted as excused. All others are unexcused absences, including tardies over 30 min.

Thank you for keeping the numbered staff parking spaces open for Valley View staff. We realize that parking for school drop off is limited. We will be freeing up 5 spots in the front lot for parent parking. To make this possible, 5 of the staff spots currently in the front lot (# 61-65) will be relocated to the Kids Club lot.
Please note:
The Kids Club lot will no longer be available for Valley View drop-off parking once the relocation is complete.
Families dropping off for Kids Club may continue to use the Kids Club lot.
Please also continue to follow the law when parking, and refrain from parking in the red zone, in crosswalks, or blocking driveways. The police will be called in every instance that this occurs.
Thank you for your cooperation as we work to improve safety and access during drop-off.
