This Week At The Petchey Academy

Dear Parents and Carers,

According to reports out this week, one in five 11- to 17-year-olds are not taking enough physical exercise. The study conducted by the UN health agency found 81% of adolescents aged between 11 and 17 fail to get at least one hour of moderate to intense daily physical activity such as walking, riding a bike or playing sports. Regular exercise is fundamental for young people both physically and mentally as it leads to better heart and respiratory functioning, mental health and cognitive activity, which all impact on learning. Motivating your teenager to exercise can be challenging so there are some useful hints and tips below.

Inactivity has been out of the question for the PE team this week anyway with football, netball and basketball fixtures every night this week, and they were still all smiles at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday. We also we took a basketball rewards trip to the Copper Box at the Olympic Park and hosted the Hackney Schools Table Tennis Championship winning an incredible 8 medals in total including 5 gold! We have seen some amazing Participation and Perseverance from our students this week making us rightly proud. Scroll down for photos and match reports.

Here's wishing you a happy and healthy weekend!

Top 10 tips for getting your child to exercise (click here)

  1. Be a role model. Your children watch and mimic your habits, good and bad. If your kids see you being physically active and having fun, they’re more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives.
  2. Use exercise as transportation. Walk to school, cycling to visit friends or roller skate to the park, take the stairs instead of the lift.
  3. Involve the whole family. From a game of football to a trip to the swimming baths, doing it together is one of the most successful ways to change exercise habits.
  4. Focus on fun. Turn up the music and have a dance party, and get active games for the Xbox or Wii Fit
  5. Make activity social. Invite friends to join the activity.
  6. Use competition as a motivator. Who can run the fastest, or do more push-ups or jumping jacks?! Give the winner a prize. And, use technology such as a pedometer to track your results and progress.
  7. Get involved in household activities. Many household chores, like washing the dog or the car, or mowing the lawn, are great opportunities to sneak in a little physical activity.
  8. Give gifts that promote physical activity. Rollerblades, bicycles, ice skates, soccer balls and even active-play video games make great gifts that promote physical activity. Activity-tracking apps and technologies also are fun choices.
  9. Limit TV and computer time using an app such as Qustodio. When your family watches TV together, get everyone moving during commercial breaks – do jumping jacks, use a hula hoop or even jump rope.
  10. Plan active trips. Include lots of walking time if you're going out for the day, or try to book holidays that include plenty of outdoor activity.
