Together we will practice and grow in our understanding of mindful meditation and awareness. Mindful meditation is a practice that encompasses a philosophy of living with a quiet mind, open heart, and in service to others. We will explore the connections between basic Buddhist and Taoist philosophy, modern mindful meditation, the Social Determinants of Health and social responsibility. We will practice mindful awareness as we address topics such as social identity and belonging, personal and collective health and well-being, compassion and service, equity and liberation.
This highly interactive class meets in person twice a week and requires 3-4 hours of community based learning outside of the scheduled class times during weeks 4-10 of the term. Service commitments are determined within the first weeks of the term based on community partners’ priorities and participants’ availability. Learners will cultivate their own mindful meditation practice 6 days a week for 15‐30 minutes a day and they will interact with assigned course materials and assignments to prepare for each class.
