Older Americans have been witness to great social and political changes in the lives and acceptance of LGBT people in American society. As the Stonewall generation nears their later life, it is estimated that as many as 7 million older adults will identify as LGBT by 2030. This population faces unique challenges in accessing the care and rights that enable them to age with dignity and stability, especially as recent research has marked a disconcerting trend of going "back into the closet" for fear of intolerance in senior housing, assistance and care facilities. This fully-online asynchronous Capstone will examine issues related to LGBT+ populations and aging to build awareness and solidarity. Students can opt to participate in remote and/or in-person community-based learning with our community partner, Elder Pride Services, a program of Friendly House in NW Portland.
