The Medieval Portland capstone is an excellent choice for those passionate about research. Students from diverse majors have thrived in this capstone, provided they are committed to the detective work involved in original research.
In this ongoing public humanities project, each student, with guidance from the professor, conducts an individual research project focused on either a locally housed object that represents the Global Middle Ages or a Portland building influenced by medieval architecture, so you need to be available to do some on-site work in the Portland area. In the 2025 capstone, some students will also explore nearby Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. The community partner varies depending on the term, but have included the Portland Art Museum, the Multnomah County Library John Wilson Rare Book Room, and Mount Angel Abbey. Check out the capstone website to see past student's work: https://medievalportland.org/.
