A cultural celebration of family history

A good musician or an orchestra is applauded for their playfulness with silences as much as their know-how of the rhythm of sounds. But one of their most lively act is when they creatively improvise from one set to another, and the music starts reflecting the audience's emotions.

When Antaraal was being envisaged in August 2022 at Pattani Archives, there was a sense of apprehension about people’s interest in the creative interpretation of historical narratives. But community engagement is critical to the sustenance of cultural preservation projects. A feeling that eventually resonated across Pattani Archives, the selected interns, and a wide range of community members who visited, engaged, responded, and immersed themselves in the different aspects of the showcase.

With an intention to continue these cultural conversations with the community members, and set a prelude to the public launch of the Pattani Archives at Sir Prabhashankar Pattani Open Window Charitable Trust, Alap is being curated in January 2023. Under the winter sky, a starry evening of performances and engagement with literary works by Bhavnagar’s old and new cultural performers will lead to a celebration of the Oral History Exercise at Pattani Archives.

એક સારા સંગીતકારની કે વાદ્યવૃંદની પ્રશંસા તેમની સૂર અને ધ્વનિના લય સાથેની આવડત ઉપરાંત તેમની મૌન સાથેની રમત માટે પણ થાય છે. પણ જ્યારે તેઓ એક ઉત્તમ પ્રદર્શન કરે છે અને તે સંગીત પ્રેક્ષકોના પ્રતિસાદની લાગણી સાથે જોડાઈ જાય છે ત્યારે તેઓ સૌથી વધુ જીવંત હોય છે.

જ્યારે ઓગસ્ટ ૨૦૨૨ માં પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સમાં ‘અંતરાલ’ની કલ્પના કરવામાં આવી હતી, ત્યારે ઐતિહાસિક વર્ણનનાં સર્જનાત્મક અર્થઘટનમાં લોકોને રસ પડશે કે નહીં એ વિશે શંકા હતી. પણ ઇતિહાસની સાંસ્કૃતિક જાળવણી માટે સામુદાયિક જોડાણ અનિવાર્ય છે. આ લાગણીના પ્રતિસાદરૂપે બહુ મોટી સંખ્યામાં સભ્યોએ પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવસના પ્રદર્શનની મુલાકાત લીધી, રસપૂર્વક ભાગ લીધો, સારો પ્રતિભાવ પણ આપ્યો.

આ સાંસ્કૃતિક સંવાદને સમુદાય સાથે આગળ ધપાવવા અને સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણી ઓપન વિન્ડો ચેરિટેબલ ટ્રસ્ટ અંતર્ગત પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સના શુભારંભ પૂર્વે જાન્યુઆરી ૨૦૨૩માં સાંસ્કૃતિક કાર્યક્રમ “આલાપ”નું આયોજન કર્યું છે. પોષ મહિનાની ગુલાબી ઠંડીમાં ચમકતી સંધ્યા, સાહિત્ય અને સંગીતના સમન્વય સાથે આપ સહુને આવકારે છે. ભાવનગરના કલાજગતના પૂર્વસૂર્યો અને નવોદિત કલાકારોના ગીત-સંગીત-અભિનય અને સાહિત્યિક સંવાદ આપને પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સના મૌખિક ઇતિહાસની પરિયોજનાના પ્રારંભિક મહોત્સવ તરફ દોરી જશે.

Bhavnagar has had its own historic literary traditions, in poetry, Bhavnagar has made a significant contribution in Gujarati language. 'Kant', Gujarati poet of the Pandit era,Krishnalal Sridharani and Prahlad Parekh, the two modern Gujarati poets, are Bhavnagar’s gift to Gujarati poetry. Even today their influence is seen in Gujarati poetry. The royal tradition of rewarding these poets has been a major contributor to these poets. Sir Prabhashankar Pattani also revered poetry. Poet Vinod Joshi talked about the literary tradition of Bhavnagar, focusing on his poetry collection 'Mitra'.

ભાવનગર પોતાની દીર્ઘકાલીન સાહિત્યિક પરંપરાથી શોભે છે. પરંતુ કવિતા ક્ષેત્રે ભાવનગરનું ગુજરાતી ભાષાને બહુ મહત્વનું પ્રદાન રહ્યું છે. પંડિત યુગની ગુજરાતી કવિતાના અગ્રણી કવિ 'કાન્ત' અને અર્વાચીન ગુજરાતી કવિતા ના બે અગ્રણી ધુરંધરો કૃષ્ણલાલ શ્રીધરાણી અને પ્રહ્લાદ પારેખ ગુજરાતી કવિતા સાહિત્યને ભાવનગરે આપેલી અણમોલ ભેટ છે. છેક આજની ગુજરાતી કવિતા સુધી આ કવિઓની કવિતાનો પ્રભાવ રહ્યો છે. ભાવનગરની રાજવી પરંપરાનું આ કવિઓની સર્જકતાને પુરસ્કારવામાં બહુ મહત્વનું યોગદાન છે. સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણી જેવા વિચક્ષણ રાજપુરુષ પણ કવિતાના ઉપાસક રહ્યા છે. એમના કાવ્યસંગ્રહ 'મિત્ર'ને કેન્દ્રમાં રાખી કવિ વિનોદ જોશીએ ભાવનગરની સાહિત્યિક પરંપરા વિશે વાત કરી.

Muhammad Dekhaiya in his expansive career as a music teacher and artist has composed across diverse genres such as ghazals, songs, bhajans, modern-era garba, children songs. Some of Bhavnagar’s artists trained under performed his compositions. He selected works of Sir Pattani, Kismat Qureshi and ‘Befam’. Though these compositions stem from a different era, they revolve around the theme of candidness, resilience and empathy for people around us.

મહંમ્મદ દેખૈયા એ સંગીત શિક્ષક અને કલાકાર તરીકેની તેની લાંબી કારકિર્દીમાં ગઝલ, ગીતો , ભજન, અર્વાચીન ગરબા, બાળગીતો જેવી વિવિધ શૈલીઓ સંગીતબદ્ધ કરી. તેમની પાસે તાલીમ પામેલા ભાવનગરના કેટલાક કલાકારોએ તેમની રચનાઓ રજૂ કરી. તેમણે સર પટ્ટણી, કિસ્મત કુરેશી અને ‘બેફામ’ ની રચના ઓ પસંદ કરી હતી. આ બધી રચનાઓ ભલે અલગ-અલગ યુગમાં થી ઉદ્ભવી હોય, પણ તે બધા માં આપણી આસપાસના લોકો માટે નિખાલસતા ,સ્થિતિ સ્થાપકતા અને સહાનુભૂતિ નો પડઘો પડે છે.

Drama reading by Young Club

Former ‘Young Club’ members including Shri Nitinbhai (Son of Babubhai Vyas) selected certain excerpts from some of the most popular dramas of ‘Young Club’. This selection of excerpts from published plays were presented to the audience of ‘Alap’ in the form of ‘Vachikam’ (dramatic reading). The performance was an ode to the ‘Young Club’ and also a form of an appeal to the theatre-lovers of Bhavnagar to revive its spirit.

'યંગ ક્લબની નાટ્ય પ્રવૃત્તિઓ સાથે બાળપણથી સંકળાયેલા શ્રી નીતિનભાઈ (પૂજ્ય બાબુભાઇ વ્યાસ ના પુત્ર) તથા અન્ય સાથીએ ‘યંગ ક્લબ ના સૌથી વધારે લોકપ્રિય એકાંકી માંથી અમુક અંશો પસંદ કર્યા હતા. આ પસંદગીના અંશો ‘આલાપના’ પ્રેક્ષકોને ‘વાચીકમ’ સ્વરૂપે રજૂ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. આ પ્રયોગ ‘યંગ ક્લબના બધાં નાટકોના પ્રતીક તરીકે અને ભાવનગરના નાટ્ય પ્રેમીઓને, ‘યંગ ક્લબ ને’ પુન: જીવંત કરવાની અપીલ સ્વરૂપે રજૂ કર્યો.

Informal Dialogue

The Oral History exercise at Pattani Archives was kickstarted in September 2021 with the intention to include more perspectives about the family history in the larger archiving project. Through an extempore performance our oral history team including - Aparna Ramachandran(oral historian), Astha Pandya(oral historian), Falguni Bhatt (proofreading consultant), Ishita Shah(oral history mentor), Praful Panchal(oral historian), Radha Devpura (Research Associate) and Soham Patel(post-production advisor) took the audience through the one year long exercise and the process of oral history recordings.

Towards the end of the evening, our academic advisor Dr. Tana Trivedi facilitated informal conversations with the audience who had many interesting stories to share about the family and the city.
