Rare Book Identification Project

The private collection of Sir Prabhashankar Pattani, comprising over 6,000 books, constitutes the library collection at Pattani Archives.

Rare book identification, ongoing since December 2025, is focused on a thorough study of the diversity of the collection, the condition of the books, and recording their bibliographical information. While all books in the library are valuable and offer unique content, this exercise specifically seeks to identify and highlight the rarest of the rare. The aim is to develop a framework for rare book identification to help us plan the best approaches for preservation and conservation of this collection, as well as to make the collection more accessible, well-referenced, and usable with best practices to safeguard it. 

Each book is being carefully observed, photodocumented, and catalogued. During this initial exercise, key details related to the books features such as special editions, signed copies and special prints are being highlighted and recorded. Annotations such as handwritten notes, signature, dates, underlines by Sir Prabhashankar Pattani or members of the family and office are also being studied and recorded. Maps, illustrations and other documents found tucked between pages of these books, further contribute to the uniqueness of each book as a historical record. This exercise has enabled a thorough assessment of the physical condition of the books while simultaneously opening up new research directions.

On the whole, the exercise has been providing valuable insights into the literature of the late 19th and early 20th century, along with personal history in the form of annotations and dedications, which makes it a dynamic process of learning, inquiry, and discovery.

સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણીના ખાનગી પુસ્તકસંગ્રહમાં સમાવિષ્ટ 6,000થી વધુ પુસ્તકો પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્ઝની લાઇબ્રેરી કલેક્શનનો ભાગ છે. આ સંગ્રહ જ્ઞાન, ઇતિહાસ અને વ્યક્તિગત સ્મૃતિઓનું એક સમૃદ્ધ ભંડાર છે.

ડિસેમ્બર 2025થી શરૂ થયેલી રેર પુસ્તકોની ઓળખ પ્રક્રિયા સંગ્રહની વૈવિધ્યતા, પુસ્તકોની હાલત અને તેમની બિબ્લિયોગ્રાફિક માહિતીનું વિગતવાર અધ્યયન કરવા પર કેન્દ્રિત છે. લાઇબ્રેરીમાં રહેલા તમામ પુસ્તકો મૂલ્યવાન અને અનોખા છે, ખાસ કરીને સૌથી દુર્લભ પુસ્તકોને ઓળખીને ઉજાગર કરવાનો પ્રયાસ કરવામાં આવી રહ્યો છે. આ પહેલનો મુખ્ય હેતુ રેર  પુસ્તકોની ઓળખ માટે એક સુવ્યવસ્થિત માળખું વિકસાવવાનો છે, જેથી સંગ્રહના સંરક્ષણ અને સંભાળ માટે શ્રેષ્ઠ ઉપાયોનું આયોજન કરી શકાય, સાથે સાથે સંગ્રહને વધુ સુલભ, સંદર્ભિત અને ઉપયોગી બનાવવામાં આવે તથા તેને સુરક્ષિત રાખવા માટે શ્રેષ્ઠ પદ્ધતિઓ અપનાવી શકાય.

આ પ્રક્રિયા અંતર્ગત, દરેક પુસ્તકને ધ્યાનપૂર્વક નિરીક્ષણ કરવામાં આવી રહ્યું છે, ફોટોગ્રાફિક દસ્તાવેજીકરણ કરવામાં આવી રહ્યું છે અને તેની વિગતવાર નોંધણી કરવામાં આવી રહી છે.આ પ્રારંભિક તબક્કામાં પુસ્તકોના વિશેષ લક્ષણો - જેમ કે વિશેષ આવૃત્તિઓ, હસ્તાક્ષરિત નકલો અને વિશેષ પ્રિન્ટ્સ - ની ઓળખ કરી નોંધ કરવામાં આવે છે. તેમજ સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટાણી અથવા તેમના પરિવાર અને કાર્યાલયના સભ્યો દ્વારા કરાયેલ હસ્તલિખિત નોંધો, સહી, તારીખો અને અન્ડરલાઇનિંગ જેવા એનોટેશન્સનો પણ અભ્યાસ અને દસ્તાવેજીકરણ કરવામાં આવી રહ્યું છે. પુસ્તકોની વચ્ચે મળતા નકશા, ચિત્રો અને અન્ય દસ્તાવેજો દરેક પુસ્તકને ઐતિહાસિક દસ્તાવેજ તરીકે વધુ અનોખું બનાવે છે. આ પ્રક્રિયામાં પુસ્તકોની ભૌતિક સ્થિતિનું વ્યાપક મૂલ્યાંકન થાય છે અને સાથે સાથે નવા સંશોધનના માર્ગો પણ ખુલ્લા કર્યા છે. 

આ સમગ્ર અભ્યાસ 19મી સદીના ઉત્તરાર્ધ અને 20મી સદીના પૂર્વાર્ધ સાહિત્ય વિશે મૂલ્યવાન સમજણ પ્રદાન કરે છે, તેમજ એનોટેશન્સ અને અર્પણલેખો દ્વારા વ્યક્તિગત ઇતિહાસને પણ પ્રકાશિત કરે છે, જેના કારણે આ પ્રક્રિયા અભ્યાસ, શોધખોળ અને શોધની એક ગતિશીલ યાત્રા બની રહી છે.
