Library Collection

The private collection of Sir Prabhashankar Pattani, comprising over 6,000 books across eight languages and a diverse range of subjects, is being preserved as an important collection at the archives. Sir Pattani was a man of many interests; apart from being a diwan to an erstwhile princely state of Bhavnagar; and a council member, he was also a poet and an avid reader. These books reflect his diverse interests, wit, and vivid personality. The library offers a range of subjects such as politics, history, religion, literature, medicine, science, law, philosophy, and others. One can find holy texts and scriptures, and books on and about war, but also contemporary literature from his time like G.B. Shaw, and H.G. Wells, as well as classics in Sanskrit by Kalidasa and King Harsha, and in English such as Eliot, Austen, Dickens, etc. There are scientific journals, encyclopaedias, periodicals, and travelogues, numerous translations from and to regional languages.

The library was originally outfitted with custom-designed furniture, including drawers for index card catalogues (currently housed at Pattani Plaza). Most books bear the stamp "Prabhashankar Dalpatram no Khangi Sangrah" and carry stickers noting the same. Many of them include marginalia and annotations by Sir Pattani himself, offering valuable insights into his intellectual pursuits.

This century-old library was originally housed in the now-demolished section of the Juno Bungalow, the ancestral residence of the Pattani family. In the late 1990s, the collection was shifted to Pattani Plaza, and in July 2022, it was formally moved to the Pattani Archives office. The transfer marked its inclusion in the Pattani Archives project under the Sir Prabhashankar Pattani Open Window Charitable Trust.

To ensure its long-term preservation, the entire collection underwent non-toxic fumigation using a carbon dioxide-based cocoon method conducted by Rentokil Pest Services, Heritage Division (Mumbai). Old ancestral cupboards were repurposed and treated with organic pest repellent to organise the library collections in the ground floor of the Pattani Archives Office. The archive remains committed to the careful restoration and preservation of this rich collection. One of its core objectives is to make this historically significant library accessible to the broader community across both physical and digital platforms.

પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્ઝ લાયબ્રેરીમાં રહેલ પુસ્તકો સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણીનો ખાનગી સંગ્રહ છે, તે આર્કાઇવ્સમાં એક મહત્વપૂર્ણ સંગ્રહ તરીકે સાચવવામાં આવી રહ્યો છે. તેમાં 6,000 થી વધુ પુસ્તકો છે, આઠ ભાષાઓ અને વિવિધ વિષયોનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. સર પટ્ટણી અનેક રુચિ ધરાવતા - ભાવનગર રજવાડાના દિવાન હોવા ઉપરાંત તેવો કાઉન્સિલ સભ્ય, એક કવિ અને ઉત્સુક વાંચક પણ હતા. આ પુસ્તકો તેમની વૈવિધ્યસભર રુચિઓ, બુદ્ધિ અને તેજસ્વી વ્યક્તિત્વને પ્રતિબિંબિત કરે છે. આ લાઇબ્રેરી રાજકારણ, ઈતિહાસ, ધર્મ, સાહિત્ય, આરોગ્ય, વિજ્ઞાન, કાયદા, તત્વજ્ઞાન જેવા અન્ય વિષયોની શ્રેણી પ્રદાન કરે છે. વિવિધ પવિત્ર ગ્રંથો, શાસ્ત્રો તથા યુદ્ધ વિશે તેમજ તેમના સમયના સમકાલીન સાહિત્યકારો જેમ કે G.B. Shaw, અને H.G. Wells તેમજ સંસ્કૃતમાં કાલિદાસ અને રાજા હર્ષના અને અંગ્રેજીમાં Eliot, Austen, Dickens વગેરેના પુસ્તકો છે. વૈજ્ઞાનિક જર્નલો, જ્ઞાનકોશ, સામયિકો, અનેક પ્રવાસ વર્ણનો, અને પ્રાદેશિક ભાષાઓમાં અસંખ્ય અનુવાદો પણ  છે.

આ લાઇબ્રેરી મૂળરૂપે કસ્ટમ-ડિઝાઇન કરેલા ફર્નિચરથી સજ્જ હતી. જેમાં ઇન્ડેક્ષ કાર્ડ કેટલોગ માટેના ડ્રોઅરનો સમાવેશ થતો હતો. મોટાભાગના પુસ્તકો પર "સર પ્રભાશંકર દલપતરામનો ખાનગી સંગ્રહ" સ્ટેમ્પવાળા સ્ટીકર છે. તેમાંના ઘણા પુસ્તકોમાં સર પટ્ટણી દ્વારા પોતે કરેલ ટીકાઓનો પણ સમાવેશ થાય છે, જે તેમના બૌધ્ધિક કાર્યોમાં મૂલ્યવાન આંતરદૃષ્ટિ પ્રદાન કરે છે.

સદી જૂની લાઇબ્રેરી મૂળરૂપે પટ્ટણી પરિવારના પૂર્વજોના નિવાસસ્થાન, જુનો બંગલોના તોડી પાડવામાં આવેલા ભાગમાં રાખવામાં આવી હતી. ઈ. સ.1990 ના દાયકાના અંતમાં, લાઇબ્રેરી ને પટ્ટણી પ્લાઝામાં ખસેડવામાં આવી હતી અને જુલાઈ 2022 માં, તેને ઔપચારિક રીતે પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્ઝ ઓફિસમાં ખસેડવામાં આવી  અને સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણી ઓપન વિન્ડો ચેરિટેબલ ટ્રસ્ટ હેઠળ પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્ઝ પ્રોજેક્ટમાં તેનો સમાવેશ થયો છે.

લાઇબ્રેરીમાં રહેલ પુસ્તકોને લાંબાગાળામાં સુરક્ષિત અને સુનિશ્ચિત કરવા માટે, રેન્ટોકિલ પેસ્ટ સર્વિસીસ, હેરિટેજ ડિવિઝન (મુંબઈ) દ્વારા હાથ ધરવામાં આવેલા કાર્બન ડાયોક્સાઇડ-આધારિત કોકૂન પદ્ધતિનો ઉપયોગ કરીને સમગ્ર સંગ્રહને બિન-ઝેરી ફ્યુમિગેશન કરવામાં આવ્યું. પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સ ઑફિસના ગ્રાઉન્ડ ફ્લોર પર લાઇબ્રેરી સંગ્રહનું આયોજન કરવા માટે જૂના કબાટને ફરીથી ઉપયોગમાં લેવામાં આવ્યા હતા અને તેમાં ઓર્ગેનિક રેપેલન્ટ સ્પ્રેથી કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. આર્કાઇવ આ સમૃદ્ધ સંગ્રહના કાળજીપૂર્વક પુનઃસ્થાપન અને જાળવણી માટે પ્રતિબદ્ધ છે. તેના મુખ્ય ઉદ્દેશ્યમાંનો એક આ ઐતિહાસિક રીતે મહત્વપૂર્ણ લાઇબ્રેરીને ભૌતિક અને ડિજિટલ બંને પ્લેટફોર્મ પર વ્યાપક સમુદાય માટે સુલભ બનાવવાનો છે.
