Welcome to the Modern Studies Department

Modern Studies at Dumbarton Academy empowers students to understand the world they live in—socially, politically, and economically. It’s a subject that brings current events into the classroom, encouraging learners to think critically about real-world issues.

Our students explore key topics such as democracy and government, human rights, crime and the law, international relations, and social inequality. Through discussion, debate, and investigation, they develop informed opinions and the skills to engage with complex global issues.

Modern Studies helps learners become active, responsible citizens who can analyse evidence, evaluate arguments, and understand different perspectives. It also supports skills in research, communication, and decision-making that are valuable for both further education and future careers.
