Middle Schools

At the middle school level, OKCPS has three Newcomer Academies to serve more than 600 students who are new to the United States and learning English for the first time. Newcomers spend their first year in the country concentrating on building basic English communication skills in English language development (ELD) classes, simultaneously working on core courses while receiving language support in order to be successful in the classroom. In their second year, Newcomer students expand upon both their English communication skills and academic language in ELD and core courses with continued scaffolded (sheltered) language support.

High School Newcomer Students Receiving Foreign Credit

High School students who are attending school in the United States for the first time can receive credit for courses they have completed in their home country by bringing a copy of their foreign transcript to the school for an evaluation. For any additional questions talk to your school counselor.
