Overview
Oklahoma’s Promise offers qualified Oklahoma students an opportunity to earn a scholarship for college tuition at an Oklahoma public two-year college or four-year university. It will also cover a portion of tuition at an Oklahoma accredited private college or university or for certain programs that meet the requirements to be eligible for federal student financial aid offered at Oklahoma public technology centers. Keep in mind, it does not cover items such as fees, books, supplies, or housing so students will need additional funds or scholarships.
Application Requirements
To enroll in the Oklahoma’s Promise program, the student must be:
an Oklahoma resident;
enrolled in an Oklahoma school and be in grades 8th to 11th; and
have a family federal adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less per year.
Special income provisions may apple to:
Children adopted from certain court-ordered custody and children in the custody of court-appointed legal guardian(s).
Families receiving Social Security disability and death benefits.
Scholarship Conditions
The following conditions must be met in order to receive the scholarship.
Maintain an overall 2.50 grade point average (GPA) for all courses taken in grades 9 to 12
Take the 17 units of required coursework and maintain an 2.50 grade point average (GPA) for just these courses
Refrain from behavior that requires disciplinary actions
Be a resident of the Oklahoma
Be a United States citizen or lawfully present in the United States at the time of enrollment in college
Have a family or student (if the student is officially determined to be financially independent of their parent(s)) federal adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less per year at the time of enrollment in college
Must meet regular admission requirements for first-time entering students at the college or university to which they apply
Other Information
The following conditions must be met in order to receive the scholarship.
Remedial courses for which the student does not earn college academic credit (often referred to as “zero-level” courses) are not covered.
The student has three years from the time of high school graduation to start taking post-secondary courses.
The student may receive funds for no more than five years after enrolling in post-secondary education or for no more than 129 semester credit hours (unless the degree program requires more hours), whichever comes first.
The scholarship cannot be used for courses taken after completion of a bachelor's degree.
The student must meet the eligibility requirements to receive federal financial aid based on the college's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.
Any student suspended from a college for more than one semester for conduct reasons will lose the scholarship permanently.
Any person incarcerated in a state, federal, or private correctional facility is not eligible to receive program benefits.
Curriculum Requirements
Units: 4 | Course: English (grammar, composition, literature; courses should include an integrated writing component)
Units: 3 | Course: Lab science (biology, chemistry, physics or any lab science certified by the school district; general science with or without a lab may not be used to meet this requirement)
Units: 3 | Course: Mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, math analysis, pre-calculus, statistics and probability [must have completed geometry and Algebra II], calculus, Advanced Placement [AP] statistics)
Units: 3 | Course: History and citizenship skills (including one unit of American history and two additional units from the subjects of history, economics, geography, government, non-Western culture)
Units: 2 | Course: Foreign or non-English language (two years of the same language) or Computer technology (two units in programming, hardware and business computer applications, such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets and graphics, will qualify; keyboarding or typing classes do not qualify) (1 foreign language and 1 computer course will not meet this requirement.)
Units: 1 | Course: Additional unit of subjects listed above
Units: 1 | 1 Fine arts (music, art, drama) OR Speech
