Digital Avatar

Jiapei Yao, Dec. 10th, 2022

Conceptual Description

Inspired by Jeff Orlowski’s docudrama film "The Social Dilemma" and Byung-Chul Han's book "The Expulsion of the Other", this project "Digital Shrine" intends to conceptually put forward the problem of how modern digital technologies learn about us and reversely shape us with their sophisticated designs and algorithms, through an immersive AR experience.

In this project, users will be presented with a virtual avatar of any person "generated from" their laptop in reality. The avatar is surrounded by objects we constantly encounter using social media, such as the like button, share button, and emoji. This intends to indicate how people are packed with all the sophisticated features of these digital technologies. The avatar itself is made up of footage of people’s activities on the internet, such as watching videos or flipping through Instagram pages, which intends to conceptually reveal how our activities online are shaping who we are.

To experience the project, you can scan the QR code and open it with the Styly app. After opening the AR project, you can align the image of a laptop with their laptop in reality and tap on the button to start experiencing it.
