Unknown

This is a virtual reality project to explore the unknown, time and space, virtual and reality. Here, the audience will gradually enter outer space, experience space walks, circle the planet, hear the active call of humans for the universe (positive outlook, the generic music used by China Central Television when broadcasting news of China's space rocket success), and also hear the voices coming from the universe (audio from NASA). They will also be guests on the Little Prince's planet B612 to feel the romantic interpretation of the planet by humans, and eventually return to reality to enter space once again.

It is worth noting that in this project, in the scene of outer space, the appearance of the characters and objects is different from reality. This is because, in this project, the cosmic environment is the reality of outer space beyond the earth, but also the human understanding and perception of the universe, imagination, dreams, etc. Thus the audience can thus think about the relationship between virtual and reality.

In addition, this is an Infinite-style VR project, where the audience can experience loops in the project, enhancing the sense of the unknown. The rotated strip shown at the end of the screen is called the Möbius strip, which is a symbol of eternity. When the viewer approaches, it will trigger an interactive session, and a video will be played, showing the appearance of the project on the laptop, reflecting the human being's perception of the outside world and imagination of space. After the movie finishes playing, it will return to the original Earth scene, and so on and so forth.

Unfortunately, I had covid during the creation of this project, which prevented me from realizing some of my initial ideas, but I still created an unknown and abstract outer space that I imagined. Thanks to my professor for the advice to make my work more abstract and artistic. I hope the audience can explore the relationship between human beings and the universe, between reality and fantasy through my works.

I am so glad to have the honor to present my project at the final IM show. I would like to present via an Oculus headset. Also, I would like to rebuild the video of a computer showing the space in person so I might need a small table that can hold a laptop, which is about height 1m with a width of 50cm and depth of 50cm.

Proposal

From ancient times to the present, mankind has never stopped exploring the unknown. The unknown may be darkness, a deep sea, an endless desert, or a vast universe. The unknown may bring fear and confusion, but it also brings exploration, discovery, experimentation, innovation, renewal, new ideas, and so on. All we know is still infinitely less than all that remains unknown.

In communications and technology class, I was introduced to HI JUNO, a NASA project in which explorers from all over the world send signals to Juno at the same time, using Morse code, and the final signal is clear and can be collected by the probe. This greatly touched me, the human exploration and curiosity about the unknown are wonderful.

Therefore, I want to create a virtual reality project to explore the unknown, time and space, virtual and reality. Here, the audience will gradually enter outer space, experience space walks, circle the planet, hear the active call of humans for the universe, and also hear the voices coming from the universe. They will also be guests on the Little Prince's planet B612 to feel the romantic interpretation of the planet by humans, and eventually return to reality to enter space once again.

It is worth noting that in this project, in the scene of outer space, the appearance of the characters and objects is a little different from reality, but more like the appearance of animation or a fairy tale world. This is because, in this project, the cosmic environment is the reality of outer space beyond the earth, but also the human understanding and perception of the universe, imagination, dreams, etc. Thus the audience can thus think about the relationship between virtual and reality. In addition, this will be an Infinite-style VR project, where the audience will experience loops in the project, enhancing the sense of the unknown.

Cole: The vision you already have for this project is already very in depth! I love the skybox idea and you have a very cohesive theme

Phillip: I love the reference to Little Prince and how it actually fits pretty well in the theme.

meera: i second what cole said, this is a very cohesive and well organized theme.

Jannah: I love the concept and how detailed your project is! The space theme makes me want to explore the scenes you're going to create and navigate through them more! I would also recommend using sounds and sound effects to immerse the user even more!

Pauline: Your storyboard is super comprehensive -- great job! I love the idea you took inspiration from, and I think choosing to things in a more fairytale like style will make it much more achievable. Good luck!

Theyab : Space buddiesss, really love the idea on how the camera is going to move and how you can use different sound effect to get the user FEEL as if they are in the space.

Rosanna: I love the lowpoly astronaut asset you found! I treminded me of the movie Little Prince.

Jiapei: I really love your concept and all these detailed illustrations about the project. It's also interesting to see some references from China Central Television. Looking forward to your final work!
