Extra-Curricular

We firmly believe that high academic achievement goes hand in hand with encouraging young people to develop their skills, attitudes and interests. Thanks to the considerable energy and commitment of our staff, we are able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

The extra-curricular schedule below gives an overview of the types of out-of-lesson activities available to students.

Norton Hill is one of the largest centres in the South-West for Outdoor Education, with a huge programme taking in DofE, the Ten Tors challenge, School Camp, ski trips and so much more.

Other strengths of the school are sport, drama, music and dance. For further details of the types of activities on offer to Norton Hill students, please see the videos below.

ACTIVITIES WEEK

One of the curriculum highlights is Activities Week held during the final week of the Summer Term. This offers an extended learning opportunity for students to develop their skills in a particular area of interest to them. During this week, students can get involved in either School Camp, Languages visits to Europe, Sports week, Arts week, Wild and Wacky Science week, Transforming Texts, Game Design, Entrepreneurs or Wellbeing week. There is also an opportunity for all Year 10 students to undertake a work experience placement.

Sports

All students are encouraged to take part in team and House sports and we have very high levels of participation. Through the highly qualified PE staff and use of external coaches, we can offer a wide variety of sporting activities at a range of levels.

Students can participate in extra curricular sport through:

  • A wide variety of clubs and school sports teams including football, rugby, netball, hockey, rounders, cross-country, athletics, tennis, cricket, basketball, dance and golf

  • School sports teams

  • Inter-House competitions

  • School Sports Day

  • County and National representative teams. We currently have students in athletics and canoeing competing for the England School teams, students competing nationally in Trampolining and students competing nationally and internationally in Swimming.

the arts: art, dance, drama, music

Students can take part in a wide variety of Arts activities outside of the classroom: from art club to dance workshops, rock bands to musical productions, and many more in between!

Students will also benefit from the new ‘Norton Hill School Arts Theatre’. This state of the art studio space will provide a number of performance, lighting and sound design opportunities and will showcase our lower and upper school productions, our annual 'Norton's Got Talent', 'Battle of the Bands' and 'A Star Danced' events!

FOREIGN TRIPS

Trips abroad are obviously difficult at the moment, but in normal times there are a full range of opportunities for students to explore the world while at Norton Hill. Activities week usually includes a wide range of Languages trips to France, Germany and Spain, as well as all the other in-school and UK-based activities.

As students move up the school, there are also a lot of further opportunities available to them, for example a GCSE History visit to Berlin, the annual Ski Trip, the Icelandic Adventure trip and then Gold DofE in the sixth form. The videos below show a taste of some of the foreign trips from the last few years.
