Special Educational Needs

Welcome to Norton Hill school

SEN Department

Mrs R Lewis

SENCO

At Norton Hill School we aim to allow our SEN students to develop independence allowing each individual to develop the skills required to allow them to be successful in both academic and social environments in preparation for adulthood. We believe that being inclusive allows all students to thrive.

A wide variety of provision is available including academic, speech and language, social communication skills and specialist SEND mentoring interventions delivered as bespoke 1.1 or small group provision via wave 2 or wave 3 sessions. A strong team of teaching assistants support the SENCO, Mrs Lewis, in providing in class support, extended learning opportunities before, during and after school hours and in developing a nurturing and supportive environment for those in need.

The school has a well-established and successful transition programme for students with special educational needs and despite school closure much of the provision will be able to be offered, although in a different set up from previous years.

Those students identified by primary schools as needing additional transition support, will participate in a transition programme tailored to their needs which include additional visits to the school prior to the September start and small group transition support will be offered during terms 1 and 2.

Additional visits to the school to meet the SENCO, key staff or to become familiar with the routines and layout of the school are arranged as part of the transition support for SEND students during the summer term as well as through transition holiday activities where possible. This is done in liaison with the primary school and the parents and is tailored to meet the individual needs of the student.
