East Midlands Commercial Collaborative (EMCC) Dementia Research Offering

The East Midlands is home to five community and mental health NHS trusts that are members of the East Midlands Commercial Collaborative (EMCC).

The EMCC trusts provide a unique collaborative offering across the region to support the delivery of commercial dementia research. We have a large patient population across six counties and together we are dedicated to providing opportunities for this population to influence and take part in dementia research.

Contact the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) East Midlands to discuss how the EMCC can deliver your dementia clinical trials: supportmystudyeastmidlands@nihr.ac.uk.

Key Sites

The East Midlands is home to a number of geographically spread sites with experience and expertise in delivering dementia studies.

Covering every county across the region, these sites offer the potential for engagement with a wide range of research participants including people from under-served communities.

Collectively, this strong regional infrastructure enables the sharing of information and best practice to empower staff to deliver high quality research studies.

Join Dementia Research

Join Dementia Research offers a source of potential participants for your dementia trial.

Join Dementia Research is a service that connects people to dementia studies.

The service is actively promoted in the East Midlands. There are over 4000 volunteers across the region who have already registered their interest in taking part in dementia research.

Mark Howells, Head of Research and Evidence at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Tust:

"With a large patient population and a wealth of experience in supporting commercial research, the community and mental healthcare providers in the East Midlands are poised to deliver your study. We have access to high-quality research sites, a strong history of collaboration with a range of different organisations, and a commitment to continually adapting research processes to improve research delivery for partners and participants alike. PrAISED (promoting activity, independence and stability in early dementia): The EMCC recruited >70% of the UK recruits for this study

SERVIER (An international, multicentre, randomised, doubleblind, Placebocontrolled phase IIb study): The first UK site to open and recruit into this commercial Alzheimer's study comparing the safety and efficacy of an IMP was a member of the EMCC

FREE-COG (A novel, free to use, measure of combined cognitive and functional abilities for clinical use): This study evaluated dementia screening equipment and produced evidence that led to it's adoption

DEME (A drug utilisation study in patients treated with rivastigmine transdermal patch): The first site to open and recruit into this commercial non-interventional study was within the EMCC and recruited 140% of their recruitment target

Exciting Initiatives in the East Midlands

We have a regional rater group and our rater scale experienced staff support each other across the region and across Trust boundaries.

This collaborative ethos helps to facilitate the successful delivery of research regionally.

The Lincolnshire Joint Strategy for Dementia emphasises the need for a whole system approach across the NHS, adult social care, public health, the independent and voluntary sector, and beyond, in order to identify the needs of people with dementia, and those at risk of dementia.

The Centre for Dementia is an academic centre of excellence for dementia research that has been set up within the Institute of Mental Health (a collaboration between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Nottingham).
