Research Studies in the East Midlands

Derby Packed Lunch Trial 

Derbyshire Schools recruited 5,308 participants from 18 schools.

A cluster randomised controlled trial using behavioural insights to improve the healthiness of packed lunches in primary schools in Derby. 

Food provision, cUlture and Environment in secondary schooLs (FUEL) study

East Midlands recruited 751 participants from 9 Schools. 

An evaluation of the implementation of national school food standards in secondary schools and their impact on the school food environment and pupil intake of free sugars: a mixed methods study. 

Caries levels among 5 year olds 2018/19

5763 children recruited from 496 sites across the East Midlands. 

The study aimed to collect information about dental decay levels among five-year-old children to provide comparative data for each local authority.  Brief clinical examinations were carried out by trained and calibrated dental clinicians with support teams. 

Translation of the SDQ into British Sign Language

Schools within the East Midlands recruited 54 from 11 Schools.

Translation into British Sign Language and Validation of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire.

Evaluation of the High Frequency Digit Triplet test in Cystic Fibrosis

Junior School recruited 25 participants into the study. 

An evaluation of the High Frequency Digit Triplet test as a screening tool for early detection of hearing loss in individuals with cystic fibrosis. 

Fluenz Tetra Enhanced Safety Surveillance

The purpose of this surveillance is to collect more information on the safety of the intranasal Fluenz Tetra vaccine in children and adolescents to determine whether there has been a change in the frequency and severity of side effects compared to last year's vaccination. 

Schools Research Highlights 2022/23

9 Schools in the East Midlands recruited participants into research studies during 2022/23.

Schools across our region were able to support the delivery of 3 different studies.

This enabled 301 children to take part in a research study.


Studies delivered included interventional and observational studies.
