Roger Reid

Basketball

Roger Reid attended high school at Springville High, where he achieved All-State honors in both basketball and baseball. He also played both sports in college for the College of Eastern Utah, where he achieved All-American status, and Weber State University. After college, he played four seasons of professional AAA baseball.

Roger started his coaching career in 1971 coaching basketball at Payson High School. In his first three seasons he compiled a record of 50 wins to only 26 losses. The highlight of his career coaching at PHS was finishing second place in the UHSAA State Championships in 1972. After PHS, Coach Reid coached basketball at Clearfield High School.

After coaching high school ball, Roger was hired to coach basketball at Brigham Young University (BYU) where he served as assistant coach from 1978 to 1989. He was then promoted to head coach where he stayed until 1996. At BYU, Coach Reid compiled an impressive record of 152 wins to 77 losses, won three regular season conference titles, two conference tournament championships, and made the NCAA tournament five times.

After BYU, Roger coached for the Phoenix Suns, the Hangzhou Horses (in China's top professional basketball league), Snow College, and Southern Utah University. He retired from coaching in 2012. Coach Reid was inducted into the Nebo Hall of Fame in 2014 and into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Payson High School is proud to have given Coach Reid the start to his long and successful career, and grateful for what he has given back to our school.
