Lampe Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering Policy for Incomplete Grades
Incomplete grades are only available for a professor to assign for a student due to serious interruption not caused by the student’s own negligence. The grade will be recorded as IN at NC State. At UNC, it will be recorded as an IN if the student took the final exam and as an AB if the student did not complete the final exam.
The interruption must be documented. You may choose to share documentation with your instructor, or for confidentiality, use one of the University offices to document the interruption. At UNC, the Dean of Students can help document a serious interruption. At NC State, the absence verification process should be used to document the interruption.
Only work missed due to the documented event can be made up.
To receive an incomplete, the student must have completed > 50% of the coursework.
There should be a reasonable expectation that the student can earn a D or higher when all work is complete.
Courses with incompletes will not meet pre-reqs for subsequent courses.
If work is not completed before the following semester begins, the credit hours for each incomplete will count toward the 18-credit hour maximum course load.
The student and instructor must create and submit a timeline for completion to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for required approval.
