The best advice for BME students hoping to study abroad is plan ahead and talk to your BME advisor! Here are some questions to consider:
When should I study abroad?
Fall or Spring study abroad is likely to affect your BME course plan. Some BME major requirements are offered in fall on one campus and spring on the other. You can use this to your advantage by getting ahead or catching up on requirements at the partner campus if you miss that course on your home campus while you are abroad.
Summer study abroad is less likely to affect your BME course plan and typically easier to plan around.
Which program should I pick?
BME students are eligible to participate in both UNC and NC State study abroad programs. If you'd like to satisfy BME course requirements abroad, look for programs at a university with an engineering program.
The BME department has two summer study abroad programs. Program offerings vary each summer. Check the Advising website or with your advisor.
“Colombia: Biomedical Electronics” Students will take BM(M)E 207 and "Technology of Ironman" through Universidad de los Andes (satisfies IPGE 2GEP or FC-VALUES Gen Ed).
"Scotland: Design and Innovation in a Universal Healthcare System" Students will take BMME 398H and HNRS 362 "NHS Scotland - Policies, Problems, and Innovative Solutions" (satisfies IPGK GEP or FC-PAST Gen Ed).
Which courses should I take?
Many study abroad programs offer opportunities to complete General Education requirements.
If you would like to fulfill a BM(M)E course requirement while abroad, you must get the course pre-approved for transfer by sending a copy of the course syllabus to the BME Director of Undergraduate Studies. Basic engineering courses required during the sophomore year and junior-level Gateway Elective equivalents are offered at most universities with an engineering program.
