The STEM elective may be an:
extra (fourth) Gateway elective
extra (fifth) Specialty elective
approved 300 or greater level STEM course. Click the button below to view the list. Tab 1 shows NC State course options, and tab 2 shows UNC course options. Any course not on the list must be approved by a BME advisor.
Pre-Health Students: If you take BCH 351, BCH 451 or CHEM 430 instead of BM(M)E 325 for one of your three Gateway electives, your STEM elective must be an engineering course. Column E below indicates if a course fulfills the engineering requirement. All Gateway and Specialty Electives are engineering courses. Students cannot earn major credit for both BCH 351, BCH 451 or CHEM 430 and BM(M)E 325.
Recommended Option: BME 481: Quality Management Systems for Engineers
This course counts as a STEM elective (non-engineering) and is highly recommended for students planning to seek jobs in the medical device industry upon graduation. There is an opportunity to test for a Six Sigma Green Belt. It is offered in the Fall at NC State and has a co-req of BME 451/BMME 697 Senior Design.
NC State Students: After enrolling in an approved course, if the course appears in the Non-Degree Course portion of your Degree Audit, email your advisor and they can shift the course up to the STEM Elective spot.
