Spring 2026 page last edited on Sept 30! SCHEDULES & UPDATES
BME students will take four Specialty Electives within one or two Specialization Areas:
Pharmacoengineering
Regenerative Medicine
Rehabilitation Engineering
Biosignals and Imaging
Medical Microdevices
Specialty Electives are offered only on one campus (NC State or UNC) and only during one semester (Fall or Spring). Identify courses you want to take and select a few backups to account for potential schedule conflicts and courses that fill up quickly.
To make it easier for partner campus students to take Specialty Electives, some professors allow online attendance. See the Modes of Instruction spreadsheet for detailed information.
See Course Descriptions for details on BME 490/BME 590/BMME 590 courses
At NC State, some Specialty Electives are offered at the graduate level (5** course number). These require additional work and often can be double counted towards a graduate degree. For courses offered at both the 400- and 500-level, the requirements to enroll in the 500-level are:
GPA must exceed 3.5
Must need a graduate level course for BME honors, Advanced Bachelor’s Master’s program, transfer credit for another graduate program, or similar circumstance where a graduate course is required
NC State Students: After enrolling in an approved course, if the course appears in the Non-Degree Course portion of your Degree Audit, email your advisor and they can shift the course up to the Specialty Elective spot.
