Using black and white only, make a shape on the upper left artboard.
Copy the shape to the right, but alter it by adding or subtracting another of the same shape so that it begins to represent both 'Shape' and 'Space'
Continue to copy and alter the shape by scaling the shape, multiplying the shape, using contrasting strokes, overlapping and dividing shapes, rearranging order, and reversing positive/negative until you have 9 variations on the shape using only black and white.
RESEARCH POSITIVE NEGATIVE SHAPE USED IN LOGOS:
Find two examples of logos that use Positive/Negative Space/Shape effectively (the links below at Logo Design Love is a good place to start!).
Save two logo images to a folder on your computer named 'Logo with Letters' (right click, or Control click, on the image to 'Save Image As...", create a new folder in the 'Save As' box)).
BRAINSTORM AND SKETCH IDEAS:
In Illustrator, look through the Type options and find ONE Serif and ONE Sans Serif font to use in your brainstorming. Add these to the shared doc and refer to them as you sketch.
Draw 3 ideas for the 'Serif', 3 ideas for 'Sans Serif' using your initials, first name, or last name. Use the "Logo of letters" file (below) for reference as you brainstorm.
Think about the letters as Shapes as you design, think about positive/negative space.
DIGITAL STUDIES: Black and White
From your sketches, select your favorite of each font to work with in Illustrator (1 logo of each = Serif and Sans Serif)
Start a new file with 6 artboards (4" x 4"), develop your favorites digitally then work 2 more ideas in Gravit for each of them (total of 3 for Serif, 3 for Sans Serif).
To be able to work with your letters as shapes, select your letters and Object > Expand > Okay. You may have to ungroup multiple letters
Work in Black and White for now and focus on Positive/Negative use of space.
DEVELOP YOUR FAVORITE LOGO FURTHER WITH COLOR, SHAPES, AND LINES
Select your ONE favorite black and white logo.
Add 4 more artboards to your document. On these art boards, develop 4 more ideas of your favorite logo by adding color (no more than 3 colors max) and shape. AGAIN, go back to the 'Logo of Letters' link above for options.
Print one page with all the artboards. (Select: ignore artboards, fit to page.) and one full size print of your favorite logo. (Deselect: ignore artboards. Select the artboard you want to print from the printer menu. Fit to page.)
