Orienteering is a sport of navigation with a map and compass. It is an easy way to learn, but can be challenging. The object of orienteering is to run to a series of points shown on a map, choosing routes - both on and off trail - that will help in finding the points and getting back to the finish line in the shortest amount of time. Cadets must have patience and the ability to careful plan out how they will get from point to point. The points on the course are marked with orange and white flags and punches to prove that the cadet has been there. Each "control marker" is located on a distance feature such as a stream junction or the top of a knoll.
Often called the "thinking sport" because of the map reading and decision making orienteering is a port for everyone, regardless of age or experience. The competitive athlete can experience the exhilaration of moving through the woods at top speed while the non-competitive cadet can enjoy the forest at a more leisurely pace.
