Navy JROTC Uniforms NAVY SERVICE UNIFORM (NSU) - MALE # Item Description and How to Wear 1 Navy Blue Garrison Cap 2 Rate/Rank Insignia (as required) How to Wear: : Rank/rate insignia is worn on the wearer's right side of the garrison cap (officers and CPOs).The center of the rank/rate insignia is bisected by a vertical line 2 inches from the fore crease of the cap and a horizontal line 1½ inches from the bottom edge of the cap. The center of the rank/rate insignia is positioned along an imaginary line bisecting the angle of the wearer's right side collar point. It is 1⅞ inches from the collar point. 3 NJROTC Insignia Uniform items are issued to Cadets during the first two weeks of school, then as needed as Cadets outgrow specific items and need new ones issued and tailored. There is no cost to the Cadet or their parents for uniform or tailoring. The only cost to the Cadet and their parents is the cost of keeping the uniform items clean.
The chart below shows the proper way the NJROTC uniform is to be worn. The information can also be found in the Cadet Field Manual and the Cadet Reference Manual.
Cadets on the Color Guard Team are issued Service Dress in addition to the Khaki Shirt/Overblouse and Black Trousers (Peanut Butters).
When are uniforms worn?
Uniforms are worn once a week -- Wednesday or Thursday depending on A/B day schedule. Uniforms must be worn from home to home. Cadets are allowed to change into appropriate attire for physical education classes and other activities that require changing with the understanding that they must wear the uniform after the class or activity is over.
1. Failure to wear the uniform on uniform day (unexcused): If a cadet fails to wear their uniform on the designated uniform day, they will receive an unsatisfactory grade for that week's uniform grade. A makeup day must be the very next day only. The Cadet with the understanding that they must report to the NJROTC office three times on the makeup day; 0730 in the morning, lunch and the end of fourth period. They must wear the uniform the entire day (from home and back home) in order to receive credit.
2. Absent on uniform day (excused absence): If a Cadet is absent on their designated uniform day they are exempt from wearing their uniform that week.
3. For uniform inspection Cadets are required to meet the grooming and uniform standards found in the Cadet Field Manual, demonstrate appropriate military bearing (professional behavior) and be knowledgeable of the 11 General Order, Chain of Command and general military information.
Grading uniform inspections
All Cadets start uniform inspections with a grade of 100. Points are subtracted as deficiencies (called "hits") are noted. Grading criteria consist of:
If a cadet disregards grooming standards that causes undue attention or embarrassment to the uniform - results in a grade of zero. Examples of disregard of grooming standards include but are not limited to
Wearing multi-colored or extreme faddish hairstyles
Wearing unauthorized and faddish fingernail polish (polish should be modest and compliment natural skin tone)
Major haircut or shave violations (sculptured hair, mutton chops, beards, etc)
Wearing earrings for males or multiple earring sets for females.
Wearing visible body piercing jewelry (such as nose rings)
Wrinkled uniform, unpolished shoes, or not wearing the issued shoes, missing uniform items, such as belts, black socks, garrison cap (cover), name tags, and white T-shirts, will result in a loss of 10 points per infraction.
All other infractions, missing J-Bar, foul anchor, rank and ribbons will result in a loss of 5 points per infraction.
Lack of knowledge of 11 General Orders, Chain of Command and general Military Knowledge will result in a loss of up to 20 points.
