Senior Naval Science Instructor

Commander G.J. Tolbert, USCG(Ret.)

My name is George J. Tolbert and I am the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) of Cougar Company.  I am from Colorado Springs, Colorado.  I am the son of a man who made the US Army a career. I enlisted in the US Army out of high school and was assigned to the 2nd Ranger Battalion (Airborne) in the late 1970’s and completed Ranger School in 1979.  After the Rangers I went to college, was a member of the Colorado National Guard and received my Bachelor’s Degree in 1986.  I was accepted to Officer Candidate School for the US Coast Guard and commissioned as an Ensign in 1988.  I retired from the Coast Guard in 2008 and began working as the SNSI in August of 2009. My Coast Guard career fields were mixed that ranged from Commercial Vessel Safety, Investigations and Intelligence.  My personal highlights were obtaining my Master’s Degree, working at the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) in Maryland and an assignment at NORAD / US Northern Command in Colorado Springs.  Other assignments included: New York City,Anchorage, (My first time here), Washington, D.C., Seattle and Morgan City, LA.

I thoroughly enjoy the position as a JROTC Instructor where I can plant the seeds that the next generation of citizens can be successful at life and the multitude of challenges that lay before them.  I am committed in developing future leaders but mostly importantly to teach the Cadets the basic life skills that are required in their professional and personal lives.  Lessons like learning to show up on time and being properly dressed are vital to future success. Understand that the JROTC is not a pathway to the military and it will never be one.  Those that join the Military do so with no encouragement to join. We will guide those Cadets that show interest and desire to join the military; however, we greatly encourage higher education (college or trade school).  I am married and the father of two boys.
