DEFINITION
A game for two teams in which a large ball is hit by hand over a high net, the aim being to score points by making the ball reach the ground on the opponent's side of the court.
SERVICE/ROTATING
Service is from the back line
Service must be underhand
A point is scored on every service
There are NO FAULTS/Do-Overs
If the ball hits the net on the serve and goes over play continues.
Student who serves continues to serve until they lose the point.
When serving team loses the point the opposing team gets the point, rotates and wins the serve.
Team rotates clockwise when winning the serve back.
Team who lost serve does not rotate until they win the serve back.
GENERAL RULES
If the ball hits the line it in IN
If the ball hits the ceiling it is OUT
If the ball hits the net on a service or a rally, and goes over, play continues
Re-do any interference so long as the ball would have remained in play had the interference not occurred
A spike is permitted so long as your hand does not touch or go over the net
The ball can be hit three times per side. It must be sent over the net on the third contact.
A player may hit the ball two times in a series just not two consecutive times in a series.
A Common Rules Violation:
Carry or "Lift" - A carry is when player contacts the ball with an open palm or when a player has prolonged contact with the ball using their hands. This violation results in a point for the opposing team.
Key Points of the Bump:
Get into position
Create a platform with your arms
Place one hand in the other placing thumbs side by side (do not interlock fingers)
Use your legs
Hit the ball with both arms
Move to the ball so that it will come down squarely in front of you
Keep your eye on the ball after you bump it

Key Points of a Set:
Start in the ready position facing the target.
Spread fingers in the shape of the ball above the head.
Form a triangle with thumbs and pointer fingers (hands should not be touching)
Place hands directly in front of the face close to the forehead. This position is called NEUTRAL and is always the starting position for the set.
On contact, set by extending the arms and legs.
Key Points of a Spike:
Hit the ball with the center of your hand.
Keep your hand open with your fingers together.
Rotate your arm at the shoulder and whip your forearm forward to move your hand quickly toward the ball and make contact.
Snap your wrist downward to impart topspin and direct the ball down into your opponent's court.
Hand cannot go over the net on follow through.
ROTATION OF COURTS
There are 8 courts in the gym
Top court (court 8) plays to 7. All other games are over when the whistle blows.
When you hear the whistle it indicates the top courts game is over.
Winners move up a court and losers move down a court or move down to the waiting area.
Play begins as soon as both teams arrive at the court.
BOUNDARIES
All courts will use the ORANGE LINES for their boundaries all the way around.
