Learning Intentions – Unité 1 - “L’anniversaire de papa”

1. Can you talk about a birthday that took place at your place? You will need to say what happened, what was bought, who was there, where exactly it took place, etc. Minimum standard: everything said is in understandable and accurate French. (1½ mins to say as much as possible)
2. Can you understand someone talking about their family? You will be given a family tree. Listen to the statements and choose the person who is being talked about. Minimum standard: 7 correct.
3. Can you read and understand the French on pp. 1-4? You will be given a passage of French with 15 words missing. Twenty words will be listed below of which 5 go nowhere. You are to choose the words which best make sense in the gaps. Minimum standard: 10 words correctly chosen.
4. Can you read and understand words and explanations in French? You will be given a list of words or expressions in French and you are to match them up with the correct explanation in French. Minimum standard: at least 7 out of 10 correctly matched up.
5. Can you write about an occasion or activity where family and friends are invited. You are to describe what took place. You will be rewarded for using new and “higher register” French. Minimum standard: that understandable and generally correct French is used. Use the passé composé, linking words, new expressions, etc. You will also be rewarded for organising your thoughts well.
6. Can you use French to compare two things or two people? Using comparatives and superlatives from pages 12 & 13, write 5 sentences in French. Minimum standard: 4 sentences correct.
7. Vocabulary & Grammar. Can you understand and use: possessive adjectives (mon, ma, mes, etc.); comparatives (moins/plus grand que...etc.); the present tense of verbs such as pouvoir, devoir, vouloir, mettre; this/these (ce, cet, cette, ces), and new vocabulary.
8. French Culture: Can you write in English about various important aspects of French culture? You will need to explain as fully as you can in English information about HOUSING in France. Also you must know the key points from pages 14 & 15. Minimum standard: most items correctly explained.
