Letter to Parents

Dear AP Human Geography Parents,

Your child has taken on the challenge of taking a college level geography class in high school! This is a huge endeavor! Many parents ask what they can do to help their child at home with such a challenging class. I first suggest reading the summer reading book, "Why Geography Matters". This book covers a few of the topics that we discuss throughout the year and will give you an idea what the course is about. Encourage your child to listen or read the news on a daily basis. You can also purchase an AP Human Geography study guide at bookstores or on line for a fee and this will help your child with studying for exams or clarify terms or concepts that are discussed in class.

It is important you remind your child that the textbook and exams are written for a college student. Initially this can be very challenging for your child. It is important to remind them that they will be learning how to read the textbook as well as learn testing strategies that will help them master the skills necessary to succeed.

It is necessary your child has internet access and checks Google classroom daily. This year I will be posting majority of the homework on Google Classroom. Students need to make sure they are turning in assignments.

Students are required to have a notebook to take notes in class. We will also be working on writing strategies and students must get in the habit of hand writing Frequent Response Question Responses.

Each year in the spring semester the school distributes contracts out to all AP students. Please make sure you read and sign this contract. The contract discusses the $93.00 AP Exam fee that will be collected in the spring as well as additional study sessions offered to help students succeed. Students who do not take the AP exam will lose the AP designation for the course on their transcripts and schools to which the students has applied will be notified.

Taking the AP course and exam is a collaborative effort between the student, the parent/guardian, and the school/instructor.

If you have any questions please email me at creynolds@mpspk12.org

Thank you for your continuous support throughout the year.
