Today our world is facing some major problems and it will take the full commitment of the human race to solve these problems. Problems such as......
Population, food, hunger, urbanization, socio-economic disparities, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, refugees, disease, crime, violation of human rights, genocide, gender inequalities, migration, extinction of plants and animals, deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, natural disasters, toxic and nuclear waste, climatic change, air pollution, water pollution, ozone holes, limited resources, ethnic conflict, war, and the list continues........
All of these problems have one thing in common......a strong geographical dimension. Problems facing humanity require students to have a strong geographical education that encourages a balanced regional and national identity and a commitment to international and global perspectives. With the world becoming more globalized it is essential young students be educated in the science of geography.
Geography helps students develop the essential skills and ask the essential questions that need to be asked to help solve the problems our world is facing today!
Every student should be taught geography at all levels of their education! Through their studies in geography, students explore and develop knowledge and understanding, skills, and attitudes and values about the world.
Students need to be globalized in their education as the world becomes smaller and smaller. Geography is the science that can prepare students for the global world they will be living and working in. So speak out and tell your State Senators and Congressmen how important the "Teaching Geography is Fundamental" Bill is for the future of our students! Geography is the only required subject that does not receive any dedicated federal funding under No Child Left Behind?
How can you Promote Geography in your school?
You can go to SpeakUpForGeography.org and send a pre-written letters directly to your Senators and Representatives! Please join the Geography Education movement in the United States! This is one way we can prepare our students for the global world they will be living in!
