Drawing and Illustration offers students an alternative pathway into the study of VCE art and Visual Communication Design. Students will apply a variety of drawings and illustration techniques to create a series of Illustrations from given starting points. As in the study of art, students will develop an understanding of Art Elements and Principles and their application in art making. They will analyse illustrations to understand how artists convey meaning and style through their artworks. They will follow the Art Process to develop and express their intentions in art works. Students develop skills in the application of a wide range of drawing media and techniques to develop and create artworks.

Learning in the visual arts is an opportunity to develop creative, analytical and reflective thinking skills. The study of art involves Art Theory, the knowledge of Art Elements and Principles and their application in art making. Analysis of artworks to understand how artists convey meaning and style through their artworks. Creating and making artworks using a wide range of media to develop a personal style in response to given starting points. Students conceptualise, plan and design artworks that express ideas and artistic intentions. They will explore the visual arts as inspiration to develop a personal style and express ideas and themes in art works. Students will follow the Art Process to develop and express their intentions in art works. They develop skills in the application of a wide range of materials, techniques, technologies and processes to develop and create artworks. Students identify, analyse and interpret how artists use materials, techniques, processes and visual conventions to convey meaning. This subject is an excellent preparation for the study of VCE Art and Visual Communication Design.

All Photographers use a variety of tools and techniques to create their work. Students will learn camera skills teamed with digital manipulation with Adobe Photoshop to create individual artworks. They will follow a design process where self-expression is encouraged and a basic theme is chosen by the student, with the results entirely up to their own imagination and creativity. They will be able to develop their initial ideas using a variety of skills and materials. Students will study and respond to the work of famous photographers and will learn some of the processes and techniques in creating artwork. Students study the way we use media and the technological changes that have occurred. They will explore popular film genres and study representation, codes and conventions used. This course can lead on to further studies in Digital Photography, VCE Media, VCE Studio Arts or Certificate III in Interactive Digital Media.

Visual communication and Design introduces students to the conventions of working in the design field. Students develop and present visual communications that demonstrate the application of methods, materials, media, design elements and design principles that meet the requirements of a specific brief and target audience. Students will learn to interpret and respond to a design brief, conduct appropriate research to inform design and follow the design process to develop and refine ideas. Students will analyse and evaluate the use of materials, design elements and design principles in visual communications from a variety of industries including fashion, product, advertising, architectural and web based design. This subject is an excellent preparation for the study of VCE Visual Communication and Design.
