If you are permitted to undertake a VCE Unit 1 & 2 sequence in Year 10, or are trying to decide between the list of year 10 electives, it makes sense to find out what subjects are required for future tertiary (University / TAFE) courses. Pre-requisites for University courses are advertised well in advance to students in years 9 and 10.
Mount Erin will advise the VCE units that are available for year 10 students and the application process.
Checking pre-requisites will help you to make an informed decision about what VCE subject, or year 10 elective to choose, taking into account your current academic performance, your interests, and any teacher recommendations for year 11.

Year 10 electives are offered as 'taster' for VCE, and normally lead into a particular VCE study or group of studies at year 11.
For example if you are considering a career in design or architecture , you can select a Year 10 Art, Visual Communication or Media elective. Students interested in an Engineering or Science career, need strong maths and science skills and should be taking Enhanced maths, or a VCE Maths in year 10.
The year 10 study guide can help both year 9 and year 10 students plan their VCE study pathway.
Tertiary institutions plan their entry requirements well in advance so that students can choose the correct subjects for VCE.
The 2026 list of pre-requisites for University and TAFE studies can be found here. The information is listed by institution and then by course in alphabetical order.
