Science is one of the oldest academic disciplines, and covers a wide variety of subjects. It is also one of the fundamental parts of the term STEM, used to refer to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At Mount Erin College we offer students the opportunity to study in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Physics.
So why study science? Science helps our understanding of the world around us. Everything we know about the universe, from how trees reproduce to what an atom is made up of, is the result of scientific research and experiment. Human progress throughout history has largely rested on advances in science. From our knowledge of gravity to cutting-edge medicines, students of Science have shaped our modern world.
VCE Science at Mount Erin College enables students to explore how people think, feel and behave through the use of scientific approaches. An important feature of undertaking a VCE science study is the opportunity for students to engage in a range of inquiry tasks that may be self-designed. Students develop key science skills and interrogate the links between theory, knowledge and practice.
VCE science inquiry can include laboratory experimentation, observational studies, self-reports, questionnaires, interviews, examination of case studies and literature reviews. Students work collaboratively as well as independently on a range of tasks. They pose questions and formulate research hypotheses. Safety considerations and the ethical standards and guidelines that regulate scientific research is also integral to the study of science.
